    Hello everyone,

I'm interested in picking up a 2nd gen 5.7 Tundra, but I am seeing examples with 100k, 150k, and 200k. There is a decent deal on one that I know of that is a little above 200k miles, but I'm unsure if its a good buy. Single owner, oil changes done on time, its at a small (non-Toyota) dealer so I'm not certain about serpentine belt, water pump, AIP, or cam tower leaks.

The truck drives and shifts great. If the truck doesn't have AIP or cam tower leaks, will it develop these issues eventually? Really shifts the value of the truck from a good bargain to a horrible buy.

    Thanks

First, Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)!

The cam tower leaks have been annoying than a cause for real concern. Not sure what you mean by AIP. Just assume you will need to change the belt and water pump and figure that into the price to determine if it is a good price. Also check to see when the last time the tranny oil and the diff fluid was changed. With even decent maintenance, that truck still has a couple hundred thousand miles in it.

It's a 2012 Tundra 5.7L 2WD Double Cab TRD Off-Road with 201k miles. Price is at $15,000. One owner since new and oil changes every 5k miles.

Other than that, I don't know anything behind the history. Its at a used car lot, so I can't speak to the previous owner. Drives and shifts smooth as far as I can tell and it is in impressive condition (save for some driver seat bolster wear, it looks new). For the interior condition, exterior condition, and complete lack of rust, it looks to be a decent deal in this crazy market. But I can't speak to timing chain, water pump, AIP, or cam tower leaks. I can take a look at the cam towers to see if they are leaking tomorrow.

If you have the VIN# you can go to Toyota's website under owner and see all the work Toyota did.

Thanks for the tip. I checked this out but only found out that in 2015 there was a recall performed for ECU reprogramming. No mention of any leaks/cam tower jobs.

I’m hoping the dealership doesn’t know about the cam tower leaks. If they did, I wouldn’t be surprised if they wiped the oil and cleaned it up a bit.

I really enjoy the power/drive of the 5.7L. But I’m torn on spending on a truck that needs a huge repair bill right away.

Leaking cam tower is not the end of the world, small leak, leave it alone, builds up, clean it off a bit. Air injection pump, by pass by hewitt tech ez enough, especially if done before failure. Seat covers will take care of the seat. That said, I don't do used period because I have seen too many flooded cars relocated and sold. Good luck and welcome to the forum!

I’m not too suspect of this particular car. Always remained in state, no rust/flood problems here.

Thanks for the tips regarding the AIP and cam tower leak.
