I’m new to both Toyotas in general and especially Tundras. I had toy truck (Honda Ridgeline -which was awesome) for 18 years before finally trading it in.

So I’ve already purchased, so my fear isn’t huge, but I have a question. Toyota has only been making V6 turbo trucks for a couple of years. Ford has been doing it with great success for years, so it’s not like the concept or technology is new… but new things to a car company always bring growing pains.

turbo chargers bring increased heat and pressure. Is there any indication that Toyota’s reputation for build quality and longevity is in jeopardy? Have they worked out all the engineering kinks to make these engines for things like towing, without sacrificing their famed longevity?

It’s probably irrational, but figured I would ask the experts if they are seeing any issues with the 22 and later turbo charged engines.

Welcome. Nice truck. Lots of information and threads on the Gen3 Forum for you to research and find the answers to your questions. I'm not worried about my Gen3 - or the issues you seem to have questions about. Tows like no other Tundra - amazing.

You will likely get a lot of spam from prior Gen owners - they like to hate.

Welcome. I have a 2024, and although it’s been solid mechanically, some of the quality control issues on trims and plastics still persist. You’re probably less likely to see them on the Platinum, but that’s just my feedback as far as issues go.

Turbos have been around for decades. Like any component there are well designed ones and cheap ones built for a price. For example lots of turbo diesels have ones than have lasted for several hundred thousand miles no problemo.

The EGR system with turbos are always more complex and can be finicky. I have not heard of an EGR system issue yet with 350k+ Tundras and Sequoias on the road. Usually weak EGR designs manifold very early.

Diesels have a decided advantage. The engines already are way more heavy duty to handle the pressure of compressing the diesel fuel for ignition, so adding a turbo into the mix isn’t over stressing the system.

gas motors are far less durable. I trust Toyotas engineers more than any other manufacturer. They have the reputation they do for a reason and that’s why I bought one. But…. There is a first time for everything, especially when they are still in the crawling stage of slamming turbo gas engines into trucks that can be asked to some serious work.

Turbos are external engines component regardless of gas or diesel. Many are outsourced so a gas and diesel could have the same brand turbo on it. Such as Bosch or Garrett turbos. I think Toyo rolls its own. Even if one fails you go into limp mode, loose a bunch of power, and give the dealer $2k to bolt on another one and all is well again.

Some OEM warranties get flaky and try to limit powertrain warranties to the engine internals only to keep from fixing turbos. Would not surprise me if the Hyundai 10 yr warranty is that way. Maybe not too lazy to find since don't own it

The EGR is still a key point. If it is a bad system you will have mucho grande problems. I have an engineering degree but not a mechanical. I took thermodynamics pass/fail 40 years ago. But EGR includes a cooler for the gas and if that cooler is a flake you have a perpetual heat machine. I think gas vs diesels gets into pre vs post cooling or something. But that gas has gotta get cooled somehow during circulation or you got problems

Welcome from LA (Lower Alabama)! I believe this same turbo V6 was used in other Toyota/Lexus vehicles for years before the 3rd Gen Tundras came out.

The 24s have been ok, you should not have any troubles as they have been fixing things.

That’s excellent to hear. Probably just tuned differently for the truck?

    thanks!

According to the executive chief engineer for the Tundra, the Tundra 3.5L TTV6 was tested for 6 years in various driving conditions, including towing, before it was launched in 2022. It's not exactly the same as the Lexus 3.5L TTV6 that been used since 2017, but its very similar and shares many of the same parts.

As with any new model year vehicle, the 2022 version had a few problems, including engine failures, but they affected a very small fraction of the Tundras sold. Those problems have been mostly worked out by now. Of course, you will always hear complaining about minor fit and finish issues, as with any vehicle.

I love your handle, BTW. Cool Hand Luke is one of my favorite movies of all time.

I'm in the research stage in prep for purchase in a couple months. Nothing I've seen/read in these forum threads has caused me any concern. As I have researched, I've discovered something about this engine design that I really like: It uses a combination of direct injection and port injection, which resolves one of my concerns with other manufacturers' approach of DI only which results on carbon coking on the back side of the intake valves. The port injection gives just enough fuel to wash any blow-by oil deposits off before it can carbonize. (I'm coming from a Camaro and Traverse with 3.6 V6 engines that are pure DI and require cleaning of intake valves or installation of blow-by catch cans for the accumulated oil residues.) I really like Toyota's approach!

it just makes for a funky idle at times...but it also provides a very capable fuel system that can handle additional air flow :)
