New guy here...picking up a 2010 tomorrow. Anything I should look out for on this one?

Hello all - I’ve been hunting a Toyota 4WD for a while and landed on this 2010 Tundra Grade Double Cab 4.6L 4WD. 100k miles for an amazing price. It checks out so far. Drove it with my wife today. Supposed to pick it up tomorrow when I get the check.

I’m pretty pumped but is there anything to look out for? Any must-dos or donts? I plan to use it daily for a short commute. Haul my bass boat with, and camp sometimes. Has a bed cover which is nice. New Pirelli’s on the front and needs two back tires. Will get wheels.

    Thanks!

Crawl under it and look for rust. Check for cam tower leak. Is it being sold at a dealer or private sale? Dealers/people will clean up and hide any potential issues. Not saying there are, but you can hose off the cam tower leak and it’ll look ok for awhile if it isn’t leaking too bad. Check heat shields under where the leak would be. Check maintenance records. If there aren’t any records, maybe go ahead and change fluids to be safe if you buy it.

2010 is a great Tundra year. Just traded mine and it served me well and was going strong. The 4.6L will pull most bass boats with ease. Does it have the tow package? Read up on AIP fails in case that comes up. Hewitt makes a great AIP bypass again if ever needed. Consider coating the bottom with Fluid Film yearly to help prevent rust, especially if you are in a rust belt area. Enjoy the new to you Tundra!

From cruising the forums I would say that checking the frame for rust is a big one, and also the bottom of the bed and it's supports as some have had it rust through from the bottom. I see others mentioning Cam tower leaks, but I don't know if that applies to the 4.6. I thought it was only on the 5.7?

I'd check it very carefully for any front suspension issues since they only changed the front tires. That's a red flag to me. If it has a bed liner, pull it out to see if there's rust in the bed like others mentioned. Sometimes it's hard to see any rust from underneath.

DEFINITELY check the bed corners for rusts, especially if it has that plastic bedliner. I too also bought a 2010 and didnt know this was a problem...until after i paid premuim for it just to find out the hard way.

If I bought it I would do a full fluid flush/change just to know it was done; engine oil, tranny, front & rear differentials. I would crawl underneith and inspect bottom of engine area for any oil, and or check if its been cleaned around timing cover, oil pan... That would tell me that there s most likely a leak of some kind. (with the exception of area below filler cap. I ve spilt a bit of oil during oil changes, and damned if I can t clean it all up.) Checking rest of underneith for rust is a good idea too. Something I think about now whenever I want to buy new vehicle is where the vehicle is from. Has it ever been a flood. There has to be a lot of flood vehicles floating around.
