Hi. I’m have a 2020 TRD Pro and am ready to upgrade the sound quality in the vehicle. I want to keep the factory head unit as well and it’s current capabilities. After doing some research on here and getting some guidance from Tech12volts. I was able to source DSR1 processor as step one. The audio shop I went to does business with Rockford Fosgate and worked up an install package for me but my gut tells me to stick with the JL 10 Sub to anchor my bass as a next step (I could be wrong). I want a crisp punch but I’m a bit of a quality sound guy so disturbing the peace is t my number 1 priority. I’m just not sure whats being highly recommended today for good all around sound quality. Could use some guidance and spec recommendations based on what others are happy with nowadays. It’s been so long since I’ve done anything like this. Here is what the local installer lined up for me…. Thoughts ?

I would certainly pay heed to @james@tech12volts input over that of your local shop.
He is an expert when it comes top Tundra audio.

Pretty sure your TRD Pro has the JBL system with the tweeter in the door sail.
So why not a front door component speakers (with separate tweeter) over a single door coaxial?
I'd also opt for the JL Audio sub over the Fosgate..

Hopefully someone smarter than me (wouldn't take much) will chime in.

    Welcome to the forum..

I just received my system from tech12volts. Everything all Arc Audio. Dual subs. Just waiting for the processor to come back in stock. Also sound deadening. I love Rockford but never had Arc audio and it’s good stuff. My audio guy told me to jump on it.

No problem!! Since he has this package with everything together I stayed with the Arc subs. This is not my first rodeo having a system done. Lol. Also welcome. Some more info the speakers are components for the doors. Not putting any in the dash. James recommends to leave them off.

Don’t want to introduce any issues so that guidance definitely makes sense especially if With keeping the factory head unit. I YouTube’d a few instances where audio issues were introduce when folks tried to tinker with dash speakers. Makes perfect sense.. Thanks for calling that out..

I have a 2019 Pro, and tried to keep the factory head unit using a JL Audio Fix86, and installed a JL xd 4channel amp and mono amp for 2 10tw3 subs and Focal components in the doors, and disconnected the center dash speaker.
I’m pretty picky on audio quality, and have a couple nice setups for my home audio, and keeping the factory head unit was where I went wrong. No matter what I did, the factory head unit never sounded good even after changing the amp to a JL VX amp with DSP. I finally got rid of the the factory head unit and it’s night and day. The signal from the factory HU is garbage no matter how much DSP and tuning you do to it.
If you’re picky about audio quality, look at the Kenwood Excelon Reference head units. They have Hi-Res dacs and they put out higher preamp voltage than most of the head units out on the market and even have built in DSPs.

Mark , Any pics of your headunit inside your Pro. I’m having my installer do my system. I might let them do the setup first to here the factory headunit. But still deciding changing headunit. Yes I agree all of my installs over the years were with aftermarket headunit. Thanks Don.

These aren’t the best pictures but I went with Kenwood Excelon Reference DMX1057XR. I didn’t think I’d like the big floating screen but it’s actually really convenient and having a volume knob is great. I did all the install myself and took my time, and sound deadened all the doors and rear and put the speakers in baffles as well, which made the sound even better.

Since no one's mentioned it, I'd hit up James @ Tech12Volts.

    :p

Seriously....the guy's awesome. Even with a faulty part (I had a line out converter that would malfunction like ONLY once every 50th start or so, that took us a godawful time to narrow down), the next time I need to purchase a sound system for *ANY* vehicle, it'll be through him. I emailed the guy once at like 10 p.m. on a Saturday knowing he wouldn't get back to me right away.

He returned my email like 10 minutes later.:thumbsup:

Is there a shop number for James at Tech12volts..? We’ve traded a couple IM messages and an email a few days back. Seemed like things were going well and I am ready for a quote but can’t seem to flag him down…. Anyone have a shop telephone number..? Thanks

I’m getting mine installed Monday. Keeping the factory head unit in the 2015 platinum
I went with pac amp pro device from crutchfield, alpine speakers in all four doors, alpine amplifier, and duel sub behind the rear seat. I’m going to sound dead in all the doors. I’ll try to have the installer get some pictures during the install
The pac amp pro lets you keep all the functionality of the truck while letting you upgrade all the other parts because everything is run through the factory amp apparently. This bypasses it

My last part came yesterday from James for my system. I have everything I need. It will be still a while till my system gets install because of my work schedule. But I just need to spray paint my speaker mounts so you don’t see them thru the door. The wood shows thru the doors.

I’m going to try and get some pics. Usually I just leave my truck there with them until it’s done. If I can work it out with my schedule to hang around while they do it. If not I might ask my installer if he can take pics during the install. Sounds good trying to connect with James.

It is impossible to make the factory head unit sound great, you are much better off just replacing it when you have the speakers replaced.

I tried that for so long because I wanted to keep it stock looking and no matter how nice of speakers and DSP, the sound wasn’t what it should be for me. I could just be picky though, because people told me it sounded really good, but some people would say Bose sounds amazing. It’s subjective.

I’m hoping you are wrong because I am going to be keeping my head unit in my platinum when I swap everything out on Monday. With my forerunner all I put in was an amp and the thing sounded amazing for me. What about keeping the head unit do you not like if you’re replacing speakers, amp, sub in the back,?

The fact that you can't get a clean signal, there are countless posts by people who tried using a DSR 1 with the Entune head unit only to replace the head unit a few months later.

What I’m finding out as long as you have the JBL headunit the DSR1 will make it sound good with aftermarket speakers.
