One of the worst things for a starter is a weak battery. Did your old battery just die or was it getting weaker and weaker which in turn meant the starter was turning slower than normal? Electric motors have a number of coils inside them. As the starter turns it turns on a pair of coils to force the motor to turn. When spinning slowly the motor is stronger but the current also is turned on longer. The longer the current is turned on the more the coils heat up. Where as if it's spinning faster the coils turn on then off. It's also why they say not to try and turn your car over for too long of a time and to let it rest after using the starter for more than a few seconds. The heat will damage the electrical insulation on the wires in the coils, the electrical brushes, and the solenoid. Of course if your old battery died then your starter dying could have just been from use.
