    Hello Fellas,

Happy Sunday :). Although I am a new registered member, I have been reading posts on this website for a while now and have learned a ton.

I just bought a preowned 2018 Tundra TRD 4x4 SR5 crewmax about 3 weeks ago and I’m very happy with it. This thing is a beast and feels like a limo inside. I have always been a Toyota guy and currently own an FJ and a Corolla so it made perfect sense to get another one. They have been extremely reliable.

When I checked the carfax, it says the Ford dealer I purchased the truck at changed the oil and filter a few days before I purchased it. When I asked the sales guy, he said that they use semi synthetic oil and a motorcraft filter.

Since I naturally don’t trust dealers, I took the truck to have the oil changed just in case after driving 400 miles after I bought it. I ended up using Mobil 1 and a Toyota filter.

I am not a car expert by any means but from looking at the filter and oil, is there anyway that they did change the oil and filter 400 miles ago?. Filter and oil look dirty to me but I need some opinions. Thanks for all the help!. Here is the truck:

Appreciate the responses. Do I bring it up to the sales guy that sold me the truck or just move on and don’t go back there?. In general the car buying experience went smooth except when he wanted me to sign the papers and the price on the paper was $700 more than what was quoted. Once I brought it up, he said it was a mistake and changed it.

dealer prob wont do anything, but im not much of a squeaky wheel kind of guy, either
it is shitty they told you fresh change - why we check fluids
kind of like oil change shops that charge for services not actually done

I agree. From now on, I will be changing the oil myself. That way I can use the best stuff and I know what goes in it!. No one is going to care about my truck more than myself!.

I'm no oil expert, but "semi-synthetic" indicates they didn't use the "recommended" oil. The oil our trucks use (0W-20) is only full synthetic, so if they did, in fact, change the oil and they used semi-synthetic then it wasn't 0W-20. Other viscosities aren't necessarily bad, though. And does Motorcraft (Ford) make a cartridge filter that fits our canister?? Sounds like some dealer BS to me.

Move on, don't go back there. Nobody told you?...dealers and salesmen lie, and service technicians say they did work that they didn't do. That's why Ive done my own oil changes on all my vehicles forever.

Knowing the miles on the truck might be helpful. The original owner was entitled to free oil changes for 2 years or 25000 miles. If he didn't take advantage of the free oil changes, then he was just irresponsible and left free money on the table.

    ^^ DITTO - That’s the way to go !!
Don’t bother wasting your time with the dealer - there just going to feed you some more BULLSHIT !!

change plastic filter housing to the aluminum one from Toyota-get Motivx wrench / drain tool and replace drain plug with Fumoto valve / drain hose- first parts I bought for my 18’ and worth every penny and made oil changes SIMPLE and CLEAN !!

Can’t really tell from those pictures. Engine oil and filters get dirty. How many miles does your truck have? Like someone already asked, was it sludgy? And I’m pretty sure motor craft doesn’t make a filter for the tundra. But that could just mean the sales guy doesn’t know what he is talking about, not that it wasn’t done.

Doesn’t really matter now that youve changed it. Unless a fresh oil change was in your sales contract, they aren’t going to do anything.

Thanks for all the input. The truck has 85,000 miles on it which is new :). My FJ has 200k and has never given me any issues. I conservatively expect at least 300k out of this truck. From my experiences with Toyota and multiple of them getting to over 200k, it should be easy. Now the Tundra has good oil and a good filter. It deserves it!.

I wasn’t really expecting the dealership to give anything for not doing it right. I just want them to know that they are full of it and I know.

I already bought all the stuff to change oil myself including the Motivx kit. Something satisfying about changing the oil yourself. I look forward to it. This time my father in law changed it for me. He commented on how nice the Motivx set was and that he wants to buy one so I just gave it to him as a thank you for helping me out. Man I love this thing!.

It seems the dealer filed a false claim of doing the oil change. I'd let CarFax know.

Same thing just happened to me - Got a great deal on 2017 but had to drive 4 hours to pick it up - When we got to the dealership they told me they had done all the fluids as they knew I had a long drive home . I always change fluids when I buy a new vehicle so I know its done right , I couldnt even get the skid plate off to change the filter snapped off 2 of the 4 bolts - Im sure if the oil was changed (If) the filter had not been changed in some time ! People suck

Hello from Fort Worth. That oil and filter are definitely old. Mobil 1 is great oil. With 85k ya may wanna start looking at the full syn high mileage oil. Valvoline also has it too. It's for engines with more than 75k. I use it in my Dodge mini van with almost 200k, and Chevy HHR with 125k. Your truck is beautiful! Congrats!

oh man, that sucks. In my case, the dealer had very high reviews so I kinda felt ok with it but deep inside I knew I should change it!. I’m glad I did. All I know is if I need any kind of work done, I won’t go to a dealer. I agree, people suck!.
