Best chance to get it to engage is to slow speed roll and give it some gentle turns of the wheel back and forth. What’s the history? Year, mileage, and was it used on a regular basis leading up to this?

The actuator is what tends to be the problem when this happens. Failures occur most often after long periods of not engaging 4WD. You can try tapping on the actuator to see if you can work something loose. If that doesn’t work, do a search on here and you’ll find threads where people have taken them apart to fix them if you’re inclined to try that.

also check for wiring damage- since it has been sitting it is possible a rodent has chewed some wires.

If 4WD isn’t engaging then you’ll be looking to troubleshoot an actuator in the front.

Fyi, after long periods of non-use I've had my 2007 take 10-15 mins of driving for 4hi to engage.

This is why on my 05 4runner I would make sure to engage it once a month, common issue.

If your long drive doesn't work then come back here and search the 1st gen section for troubleshooting info. Chances are there's pretty good data on here.

Glad tapping on it broke it loose. Always a good day to save $1,000.

good % of the time, the bomping does it every time. Exercising 4wd, moonroof, very back window, etc periodically to the maintenance schedule very much recommended !
