I live in Miami and we recently got some pretty bad flooding, I was on my way to work and my 2006 Toyota Tundra 4WD V8 bogged out. I came to realize my air intake is right below my passenger fender and the truck hydro-locked, causing it to throw a rod, should I get a snorkel? and is there anything else i can do to prevent water damage in the future?

No snorkel on mine and I driven through water that went to the bottom of my doors. Just take it slow and you should be fine.

Most snorkels are not water tight and not the intended purpose for one. The video's you see of people making deep water crossings have custom setups.

Best thing you can do is not forge deep water crossings or as others have said, take it slow.

Depending on how nice your Tundra is (being a 2006), not sure I would put the time and effort in a motor swap.

So did you get any water in the cab? For what tundras bring in my area, I’d swap it and keep right on rolling

slow and steady wins the race in water crossings.

Turn around don't drown. I have never liked a job enough not to use a sweet excuse like a flood to not go to work.

I did not know they had trees in Miami other than the Endangered Organic Palm Tree and those aren't allowed to be cut. They help stabilize the sand dunes and feed the Me Ammi Night Club Crabs.

Snorkels only protect your engine from eating water, if it is sealed. From my work with military vehicles that have fording kits, all the electronics also need to be sealed, alternator, starter, plug wires, ecu, etc. for them to survive under water action, todays vehicles don't like water over axle deep.

In the military in 1966, Armour Calvary Recon training at Ft. Knox KY, we drove jeeps with fording kits that included sealed engine electronics, elevated air intake and elevated exhaust outlet, etc. Deep water also messes with headlights and taillights. These were small four cylinder engines with manual transmissions and 4 wheel drive. We drove through creeks that looked flat and shallow but every now and then, you could find a 6 foot deep pocket. We were young and had lots of fun getting wet and driving with water in our laps. Our jeeps had M60 machine guns on pedestal mounts. I would not want to go into deep water with a vehicle not intended for fording. Here in Kentucky, we sometimes get flash floods from heavy thunderstorms and sadly, more than a few people, including women and children, drown in fording attempts.

My brother-in-law was at Ft. Knox when they made Goldfinger. He was one of the soldiers marching in formation who fall down during the gas attack scene.

I just watched that movie. It must have been quite a change for those guys to be involved in a film production...
