i was towing my travel trailer through Chicago at night and lost the running lights on the trailer. Checked a couple fuses, they are fine. I don’t have power on a volt meter at the 7 pin connector for the running lights. Is there another fuse panel somewhere other than under the hood? What am I missing?

I recall a couple situations similar to yours which turned out to be a connection at the 7 pin of the truck, loose wire, ground, something right there...hop under the truck and jiggle...

I would also check the back side connection of the 7pin. When I moved mine to the bumper, it was corroded and nasty.

I’ll look again but I didn’t see one there. 2016 TRD pro. All I see is a knee airbag.

Do you still have trailer brakes?

Yes, brakes, brake lights, blinkers and 4-ways. Also have running lights on the truck. Just no power to the running light pin on the 7 way connector on the truck. Didn’t see anything loose broken or corroded. Also took the Panels off at the kick board and didn’t see any fuse panel back there.

Well you should be good to travel in the daytime. Figure it out when your in the comfort of your home. Enjoy why you are away and don’t stress it.

Only problem is we have an 11month old and a 7 hour ride so we have to travel at night when he is sleeping unless we want to hear him cry the whole way.

That sucks. My kids always travelled great, especially with the rumble of the Tundra. Those bag DVD players are life savers. Hang it from the back seat head rest, put on repeat, hours of giggling.

    So let’s start over:

Pull fuses associated with running lights. I mean pull out, swap out if you have extras. Look in the slots to see if it is corroded.

Pull relay out associated with running lights and swap with another relay in PDC (like the starter relay. If truck doesn’t start...bingo)

Pull 7 pin plug out from bumper and let dangle. Then unwrap the tape, disconnect the harness and check power there. This will be an indicator if the plug is faulted somehow.

Is your brake controller throwing any messages? Codes?

I will do this in the morning. Thanks for the help. I did pull the fuse and swapped the relay and didn’t get it working. I will pull the plug out and check it. No codes on the brake controller.

We need to find where the power stops, and I have a feeling it’s at the back side of the plug. That’s an easy/cheap fix.

Well I took the plug out of the bumper. Everything was tight and no corrosion. I pulled every fuse out and inspected it. Swapped the relays. Nothing. Then I took the tow tail fuse out again, looked in the hole, didn’t see anything, put it back in and they came on.....not sure what to think.

Well that's actually some good news....and bad, but an easy fix.

My 7 pin connector looked like hell when I pulled it apart.

The good is you have found your problem, the bad is how to fix. Obviously you are getting some moisture and small amounts of corrosion in the PDC. What you can do is get some contact cleaner, pull fuse, spray a small amount of contact cleaner, install and remove fuse several times to make sure good contact.

You may have to do this a few times per year due to your geographical location. In Colorado, it's dry as a popcorn fart in some areas and would never have to worry about this (and my trucks are garaged).

Hopefully this gets you some relief and a good drive home at night without junior screaming the whole time.
