I have a 2010 Tundra Crewmax with 5.7 engine and 4x4. I have replaced rotors and pads multiple times and still have shake/shimmy when I brake. It is not consistent all the time, but lately it seems to brake smoothly until it gets good and warmed up after a few red lights or something. I have tried drilled and slotted rotors, different pads etc... and no effect. I had it at a specialty performance shop and they took it apart last week and said probably not a sticking caliper, but suggested toyota rotors and pads. I did that, and it still does the same darn thing. Should I just replace calipers or do you experts have any other suggestions. Ive got 230,000 miles and I think I am on my 5th set of rotors and pads or more. It rides great until I touch the brakes, and neither me nor the mechanic could tell if it was front or back, as it seems to shake the whole truck.

    Are you on original shocks?

Yes, at least since I have had it in 2012. That was one of possibilities mechanic said, even pointed out some fluid loss on rear driver shock. Do you think that would cause the issue??

I had a vehicle years ago that shimmy a lot on braking, turns out the front shocks were blown, which caused the uneven tire wear And brake Shimmy.

a ten year old truck needs new shocks, it will handle way better for you as well, you dont need to spend a fortune either, you can probably find a brand new set off a tundra getting lifted. I would make sure balljoints are ok as well, then check alignment if it were mine

Maybe not causing your entire issue, but it could be contributing

Great to know. I had not idea. I just thought if it were shocks Id be bouncing at times other than breaking. I think they quoted $300 to change the two rear shocks.

Rear shocks are so easy to change. I bought a pair of gently used stock rears for 40$ on Craigslist just to have as backups

@88auburnman if your shocks are known to be bad start there. there's a list of things that can cause that issue. if the shocks dont fix it...

have your rack and pinion bushings checked. those pesky bastards was my issue of the same problem.

if your mechanically inclined or mildly and want to check the bushings your self.

with the wheels straight pull of the front skid plate clean the area around the bushings and on the R&P , put some painters tape around the bottom bolt up to the top part of the bolt nice and tight. put the vehicle in accessory mode/position and turn the wheel back and forth hard. if the tape breaks its the Rack & Pinion bushings.

i went down the rabbit hole with that one chasing it for months. almost bought new rims and upper control arms. till i talked to my buddy who does lifts and truck services told me to do that.

if you need location pics let me know i have plenty from i did mine.

The cause of this could also be due to thermal expansion of the pad. Basically the pad widens as it heats up and the clearance between the sides of the pads starts to get wedged in caliper.

I thought I had the same issue but it turned out the toe was way out of spec so the outside edge was scrubbing and fucking with the braking system because she don't brake right when the tire is trying to pull away from the truck. Hot brakes made it worse but the solution was the alignment.

Hope that helps you from tearing your hair out.

I may side with the shocks and struts. I'm on original shocks and struts, irresponsibly, and am starting to encounter this shake and shimmy while braking once its hot.. I'm on my 2nd pair of Toyota front rotors at this point and time and have noticed a fluid stain under my rack and pinion on the driver side crossmember... I'm also a proud owner of an 07 and 223k miles...
