De-chroming: Swapping the chrome exhaust tip on my Platinum for the black tip that comes on a TRD Pro.

My problem is the last 3-4 inches of the exhaust pipe flares out (maybe a 1/4 to 1/2 inches in diameter. Due to deformation or expansion, the existing exhaust tip is now too narrow to fit over the expanded section. The illustration depicts this expanded flange and the spacers used to secure both the existing tip and the new one.

Has any one successfully gotten the old tip off? If so, how? Any suggestions are welcome. Thanks!

Take a piece of wood, thick wood and put it against the pipe end of the top and whack it off. It will take a while, and a lot of elbow grease but keep whackin till it’s off.

That may do it. I'll give it a shot tomorrow.

Hey in all seriousness, the flared portion is not a deformity, flaw, or expansion in the tailpipe, it comes that way from the factory. You’ll notice some trucks without an exhaust tip still have that flared portion of the tailpipe, and if you buy a replacement tailpipe you’d see the same thing. The only way to remove the existing tip is to cut off that flared section. You may find this thread to be helpful:

You need to get the spacer out before that tip can come off.

Take the spacers out, stick a large screwdriver in there and bend it outwards all around you will be able to pull it off.

If there is a bolt on there they will come off. Loosen the bolt and the spacers will come out and the tip will come off. If there is no bolt they are welded and they are coming off. As far as the pro/TRD dual exhaust those tips are welded on and I have not seen them for sale. You can get flat black ones that attach with the two spacers and the bolt.

The spacer is held in with the ring that was tightened down to install the tip. There is no way to get any screwdriver in there to loosen it, trust me!!
The piece of wood at the end of the tip up the pipe tube and whack the crap on it till it comes off. I swear I must’ve took an hour before it even started budging and slowly started creeping off the pipe.

I removed mine with a screwdriver. Loosen the tip remove the spacer, place screwdriver where spacers were and bend it up ALL around the diameter of the tip and then pull it off. :muscleflexing:

I’ve done it to mine plenty of times? Idk Maybe im magic.

takenthe clamp off and move the tip get the spacer out and it will come off take a little force but every time I’ve done mine it wasn’t an hour of work. It’s defiantly a tight fit but I don’t see why you would have to cut the end of your tailpipe off to get the tip off to install another.

Has to be it. You would be surprised how many people don’t know what a screwdriver is tho.

I guess I need to clarify: From the beginning I removed all mounting hardware (Spacer and fully removed clamp) I've tried to gently pry with a FLAT HEAD screw driver. I was just wonder if any one had a "trick" but I think it's just a brute force and hammer kind of thing. And when I spoke of deformation I was referring to the tip section where it is secured and possibly over tightened.

BTW, I Just put on my new skid plate and was unimpressed with Toyota's QC. Missing clips and fasteners for the original skid plate. Wonder what else is done poorly. My Indiana assembled truck was muy bueno!

Don't be gentle. Put the screwdriver in and pry it all around. It will be out of shape but if you or someone else uses it again once you put the spacers and clamp back on it will take the round shape again.

    Don't give up.

This is the best way and less damaging.

That skid plate install was a bitch solo and not using a full lift. got a little claustrophobic under there. I'll work on the exhaust soon.

Also, anyone thinking about the TRD skid plate it's a no brainer. one is thin gauge steel and the other is 1/4 Al plate. Here's the difference in coverage area:

Update: Got it off…just wedged with screw driver and pulled.

Lol, I am struggling with this now. Have it soaking in some penetrating oil. Was using a flat head to pry without much success. Will step up to a bigger screw driver. If all else fails, cut off wheel to the chrome I guess
