    Hi!

Just purchased a 2024 tundra in SC which is part of that weird SE Toyota deal. The dealer said that if I don’t purchase the Toyota extended warranty at time of truck purchase then I cannot purchase Toyota’s Ext Warranty afterwards - I would have to pay more and purchase a used car warranty as the truck would be considered used! She kept saying that it was JM&A Vehicle Service Contract (JM has something to do with the SE Toyota deal here in the SE) but said that it was JM&$ which sells the Toyota warranty.

Is this really the truth? If you live in the SE can you only purchase a plan from JM&A Toyota and must you purchase it at the time of purchasing the vehicle? I would have thought that you could purchase the Toyota ext warranty for 3 years or 36,000 miles like it says on the webpage but maybe there are different rules for us who live in the area covered by the weird SE Toyota deal?

I tried to contact Jerry but was getting no answer.

My heartiest thanks to anyone who can help me and let me know if I missed my chance to purchase a Toyota Ext warranty for my brand new 24 gorgeous 1794 Tundra or if there is a way to still purchase one in the future.

They're just trying to lock you into a high price. You can buy it after purchase, but it has to be within some reasonable time period. There's a guy on this site who can get you a better deal on the extended warranty.

A quick Google for the same subject yields the following information:

    Toyota Factory Warranty
Your car must still be under factory warranty to be eligible for a Toyota extended warranty, so it’s wise to look at the terms of your current coverage to determine if and when you need extended protection. All Toyota factory warranties include a 3-year/36,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty and five years or 60,000 miles of powertrain coverage.

Here’s a breakdown of exactly what the Toyota factory warranty includes:

    Toyota Factory Warranty Warranty Length
    Basic coverage 3 years/36,000 miles
    Powertrain warranty 5 years/60,000 miles
Corrosion perforation warranty 5 years/unlimited miles
Emissions coverage Varies based on federal and California regulations
    Accessories warranty 3 years/36,000 miles
Hybrid battery warranty 10 years/150,000 miles
    Hybrid-related component coverage 8 years/100,000 miles

Thank you so much for your reply. I read the bit about just needing to be under warranty from the Toyota page to the dealer and they said that they sell JM&A Toyota Warranty which is the Toyota warranty for the SE Region and that must be purchased at time of truck purchase. That is the only Toyota warranty. I know that living in the SE region there are different rules for us and different fees then for other regions. So - is the only Toyota Ext Warranty that I can purchase and use in the SE region the one from the SE region JM&A group? Can I purchase another Toyota.com policy and have it honored and if so where do I purchase it as our dealer says it had to be purchased today if I wanted a Toyota policy. Again - I am hoping that Jerry returns my call as I wanted to purchase from him but maybe he cannot sell to me as I am in this crazy SE region?

The finance person sells that at time of signing and makes a commission on it, so they will say anything to "make" you buy it. I decline every time just because they get pissy about it, then I definitely won't get it from them.
You can get the warranty afterwards.

Thank you!!!! I just wrote this response to another poster who responded to me:
“Thank you so much for your reply. I read her the portion from the Toyota Financial webpage where they say I can buy the platinum warranty as long as the truck is under warranty. She kept stressing that it was JM&A Toyota Warranty that she sells and that it must be purchased at time of truck purchase and we talked about how it was JM&A as that is the group over the SET (SE region??). She made it seem that I cannot buy plain Toyota ext warranty but she could sell me one other plan which is from the group who owns her dealership. It was very stressful. But my husband and I decided to not buy it and come home and ask all of you. I love this forum and how helpful everyone is. And I did try to reach out to Jerry but maybe he was not in the office today. Anyway - I cannot tell you how much better I feel after reading your answer. I feel like a huge weight has been lifted. I know I want a Toyota Ext warranty Platinum version but I wanted a chance to come home and get a quote from Jerry for it as so many people are so happy with him. I am so glad that we walked and that I read your answer.

Thank you to one and all

Drop him a note saying he lied to you and you're going to tell everyone about it. Copy the GM and Toyota Sub on Reddit.
Buy a warranty from someone else.

I am so glad that everyone is confirming that she lied to me - and that it is not just a crazy situation because I live and buy in the SET! Living in the SET and buying a Toyota is very confusing as they have their own rules - and add whatever they want to the truck even if you do not want it but you have to buy it because you have waited so long for a truck! (Actually our 1794 was pretty stripped down but it still had some SET stuff on it that we did not want but bought just to get the truck!!). The truck is drop dead gorgeous though and we are thrilled that it is home with us!

I hope you drop the GM of the dealership a link to this thread. If they are a standup type of person then the person who lied to you will be job hunting. If they aren't then that person will still have a job and you'll know where to tell everyone not to buy their Toyota from.

When they send you the survey (and they WILL send you a survey), make sure you mention this BS tactic that they tried to pull. Then see how fast they call you to try to smooth things over…..

Wait until you can contact Jerry. He will take care of you. He is the nicest car employee I ever dealt with. There is no hurry. Put in your review that they tried to force you to buy a warranty that day. That is high pressure tactics from the old days. Please don't mention Jerry in your reviews are dealing with Toyota. They can shut him down.

Can also confirm Jerry is awesome; bought my warranty from him as well. He's extremely helpful, and the warranty was *FAR* cheaper than it would have been had I bought it from the dealership. :) Definitely wait for Jerry to get back into the office; you'll be glad you did.

Like everyone else mentioned, they were definitely lying. I’ve bought 7 Toyotas in the last 12 years. You can absolutely buy the warranty anywhere else, and have until your factory warranty is expired to do it.

And piggybacking on what Shawn said: The survey is a HUGE deal. The manufacturer holds back a certain percentage of the purchase price from the dealership pending the survey (I believe it’s 2% from Toyota). If you don’t give them a perfect score in every category the dealership loses that money. Enough “bad” surveys and they’ll have their future allotments reduced. It’s kind of a BS system since a 9/10 is considered failing, but it is the reality. Some dealers penalize the salesperson for that.
Dealerships would almost rather not sell you a vehicle than risk an imperfect score on the survey. They’d certainly rather you not submit it at all than not give them a perfect score.

All that to say, the survey is a very good way to get leverage after the sale if you aren’t happy with something. You’ll almost definitely be contacted by the sales manager or GM before you get the survey. It will be something along the lines of “If for any reason you can’t give us a perfect score, please let us know so we can make it right”.
That’s your opportunity to let them know and they’ll do what they can to make you happy. I’ve had very small issues with a couple of other dealers. One gave me some free Weathertech floor mats, the other gave me free extended maintenance. I didn’t ask for these things, just responded to the GMs truthfully about what bothered me. I did give them perfect surveys in response.
Out of the 7 Toyotas I’ve bought, I’ve returned two imperfect surveys. One of those dealerships wouldn’t even quote me next time I was looking.

Once you’ve submitted the survey, they’re going to be a lot less likely to help you. I may be wrong, but I don’t think you can change it after the fact.

HI! Thank you for the warning - it is an impt one - but I would never mention him to anyone outside of this forum. I only have mentioned him here because others have. I appreciate what he has done for the other members of the community and would try my absolute best to never bring harm his way. But it is an impt warning to give because it is possible that I had not thought of that. So thank you again.

What's the latest on this - pricing as well as best source for purchase price?
Just got the truck but (so far at least) will probably keep it longer than original warranty.

FYI. If a finance person says WARRANTY when trying to sell you something. Absolutely could be fought in court as WARRANTY is free. I was in the car business for years. We heard of lawyers getting a dealership by the balls because they kept trying to sell them an extended warranty. It is an EXTENDED SERVICE CONTRACT. Or some sort of combination of that verbiage. Not sure if stuff has changed but I was always taught when I was working deals to never sell a warranty.

Let me ask you. Why no extended warranty?

    because I don’t want it.

    but why?

I don’t want to over pay it buying from you!

    Yes.
I never buy extended warranty on a Toyota, mostly because I buy new and it has factory warranty.
When I bought my son's Camry (used) they got me talked into a warranty. $3,000. When I got home and I read through the paperwork, I realized that the CPO already comes with a warranty that was as good as or better than the one I just bought. And they run concurrent, so it was a total waste of money. It would take a year's payments just to pay for the warranty before I even start paying off the car. So I went in the next day and cancelled the warranty. The finance guy was so mad and nasty, I think he had already spent his commission the night before.
Fortunately you have 30 days to cancel.

On a side note, in case people don’t know this: When a salesman / finance manager leaves you at their desk to talk to the manager or whatever, there’s a high likelihood that they leave their phone on speaker. This way they can go to another office and listen in on what you and your spouse are discussing. It gives them insight into your mindset and people may inadvertently spill the beans on how much they’re willing to actually pay.

I’ve noticed this multiple times at dealerships, and my wife and I will play into it. The best proof I ever had of this happening was once the deal was done on a Sequoia and we were waiting for finance. I told her “If these mfers try to sell us an extended warranty we’re out of here”.

It’s the one and only time it wasn’t even mentioned at all in the finance office.

That's why you don't say shit when they leave. You don't say shit when they give you a shit-ass offer and try to hand you the pen. First person to talk loses.

Never show emotion at the dealership and if you have to talk to your spouse or someone else about the deal talk to them in private outside or in your vehicle.
