HI i just got my new 2017 4x4 , I dont know anything about 4x4 so i wanted to test it and I did it on DRY pavement , I know now that is a NO NO but i am worrie that i broke something basically i but the truck in 4x4 in the parking lot and i started driving didn't really feel anything other that tractcion from the front but when i got to my destinistion about less than a mile away in the parking lot when i was truning my wheels started to lock on me to the point the car didn't move i really didnt but any gas or pushed it i simply but the wheels straight and took the truck from 4x4 to 4X2 the light on the dash " little car with 4 wheels " was flashing like if it was trying to disengage so i press on the gas just a bit the cars start moving and i hear a pop the light is now off and i am in 4x2 mode if i try to activate the 4x4 i hear a little sound like something is engaging and the light appers i did several times just to check if something was wrong it apears to be working fine but i couldn't sleep last night just thinking about that stupid mistake i made. I know i can't use 4x4 on pavement i am well aware of that now but do anyone think that something broke by this happening once?

    Welcome from CO

Traction light goes on (which is the dahs light you described) when 4WD is engaged. You can drive it in 4WD (10 miles per month is recommended) but it has to be on straight pavement. Don’t turn while engaged in 4WD on dry pavement or youll bind the driveshaft like you did here. I’m sure it’s fine.

Great the cars has 80 miles only i feel so bad !!! so just to be clear the bind is normal but since this only happened once it should be ok and its design to take it ? it just really bothers me that it popped.

If you turned on dry pavement in 4WD the bind is normal.
The sound you heard is prob the driveshaft engaging in/out of 4WD

I'm saying if you messed up your truck due to driver error and not reading the manual and have to get it fixed I would get rid of the post stating how you messed it up so there isn't an issue with getting the warranty to cover it. For example proof online that you messed it up. I'm sure you will be fine and hopefully everything is okay. Sean266 is very knowledgeable. Sorry for the added confusion in your time of crisis.

Just Google searched the binding issue and got a lot of good info and insight into how why and when this binding happens and what the noises are that you heard. Also pulled up a thread from this site a couple years old in binding and best ways to engage disengage 4x4 hi on dry pavement to lube up. Don't turn, disengage while moving before turning. Engage while in gear moving to help with line up etc. I've had my truck since Feb and about 4k miles on top of the 25k it had and need to do this.

    @Taco17
I would strongly suggest you read the complete section in the manual about engaging and use of 4wheel drive. Then, head out to the woods or field or dessert and gently put the truck through its paces. If possible, actually try a steep incline while locked in 4lo. This will let you know if you have a problem.
I would absolutely not suggest that you go to the dealership and fraudulently present yourself as an innocent victim in an attempt to lie your way to getting free repairs. Please let us know the outcome.

no, i don't have any intention to do that, I will test the truck and see if anything is wrong, I just hope i didn't F$5^#3 anything. i been reading regarding the issue i had and everyone tells me that it's normal but is it normal to the point that it can't hurt anything if it happens once or mechanically normal and something broke? another response i get a lot is YOU CAN'T DRIVE 4X4 PART TIME IN HIGH TRACTION TERRAIN. Believe me i which i had read the manual but i didn't ,so basically i just want to know base on all of your experiences could that had cause damage?

Obviously the possibility exists that you did damage but I believe it is very unlikely. These are well built trucks and very tough.
This is why I suggest that you take her out and test things on soft ground where you won’t get any binding.
At this point, you are worried about fixing something that you don’t know is broke.

Taco - take a chill pill (relax). The Tundras are tough trucks. Find a dirt/gravel road and follow the manual directions to put it in 4W-HI and drive it a couple of hundred feet. Then following directions in manual put in in 4W-LO and drive it 100 feet. This should be all you need to do to ease your mind. Finally, follow the manual and put int back into 2 wheel drive. NOTE- read the entire section of the manual. For example, the manual tells you want to do if 4W-LO light blinks ect.

I agree with you. i am worried about something that i don't even know if it's broken, let me ask you would i get any results testing with a boat if i take a boat out from the ramp in 4lo . at this point, i will have my ears open for any grinding noise, i am not sure if you have something else to add like vibration ect...

Do this testing initially on a flat gravel road like @zlaneb said above. Don’t complicate things by adding any additional factors

I pulled my boat out of side yard the other day and grass was wet. I forgot to take out of 4wd until I got down the road a few miles. All is fine. I normally feel the tightness in steering wheel when I turn out of drive. I have left hunting ranch in Taco forgot I was in 4wd for several miles. No ill effects. Just do not make a habit out of it.

HI all , well i didn't had time to do the full test but I did found a nice place about 300 ft L by 150 W that was full of gravel, dirt and some puddles. I put it 4x4HI and felt the gears engaging so i gave it some gas and started drving and truning dindn't feel anything biding or any sound after that took her out of 4x4 put her on straight line again and engage 4x4 did the same thing just a little more agreesive , i did this about 5 times the only thing I felt was that one of the time it took longer to engange ( the light with the car was bliking ) and i gave it a little of gas basiiclly i let my foot out the brake and i felt a little pop like when you put the car in drive on a hill and u have all the weight pressing on the transmission. I didnt do any crazy sharp turns i wasn't sure if i could do that i am planning to go this weekend for a real test, but i wanted to ask again if it was ok to make sharp turns on gravel with 4x4 on .

I have a few rules I always follow when engaging or disengaging 4Wheel drive.
    1) keep er straight while engaging/disengaging
    2) while truck is slowly rolling let off gas and hit button while coasting. (Seams to work better while moving then in a stopped position)
3)never turn wheel all the way to one side while in 4 wheel drive( if you can help it)
When pulling from off road into parking lot/gas station/ driveway or anywhere your going to need to make sharp turns, disengage 4wheel drive so you can.
4)Never engage/disengage while moving more then 45 mph. I think the manual talked about this and it might be a few more mph but, that's where I draw the line.
Have fun wheeling, buddy. Good to have you. Cheers!
