Hey guys, do you use a impact gun to take off a stuck oil filter canister? I actually gave up. I drained the oil and filled it back up after trying to get the oil canister off even with the oil filter wrench that is specific for the canister. I consider myself very strong actually stronger than most average people not tooting my own horn and I couldn’t get it to budge I literally tried for one hour.

Do you have the plastic/factory one? I'd get the metal OEM. I had to use a 1 1/16" socket on the nut portion of the oil filter wrench with 1/2" drive breaker bar. The 3/8" was too puny to get any leverage. I wasn't concerned with messing it up because I had a metal one waiting to replace it.

ETA: My 1st thought was using a 3/8" to 1/2" drive adapter but didn't have one in my tool box

Try using a dead blow hammer to hit the wrench. I had to do this on my wife’s 4Runner (same canisters). Idk why the dealer puts them on so tight. Oh, and replace it with the aluminum one. You can find it on Amazon

Longgggggg breaker bar..when i did my first oil change after the freebies, the oil filter cap was what i felt like glued in place. Needless to say, it cracked and came loose at the same time. Luckily, i had the metal oil filter housing cap ready to go on in its place.

This. Skip the impact gun and use a long breaker bar

It helps if you change the oil when it’s still warm. Cold metal contracts, so doing an oil change on a cold motor causes the plastic filter cap to damn near seem stuck. Doing it on a warm motor the metal has expanded and things aren’t as snug.
Think about how it’s done at the dealership. They are changing oil on a warm motor and putting everything back together snug on a warm motor. So once the motor is at ambient temp, it’s going to be even tighter than it was when they tightened everything up.
