Posting and asking this question for a friend of mine who has a 2018 SR5 Tundra that doesn’t have integrated navigation. What is his best option for navigation? He told me today that “he was told” he could somehow get navigation on his head unit through his smartphone. I am unfamiliar with this and feel pretty sure you guys have dealt with this.

    Thanks

Download Scout GPS on the smartphone. Go to the truck, turn Bluetooth on and add the app to the Entune system. Love the app and it’s free!

Is the Entune system in the SR5 package? I've struggled getting Waze or Google Map to pass audio over bluetooth. I get phone calls and message notifications just fine.

I think you have to download GPS Scout Link both on your phone and head unit. I have the integrated nav so I'm not 100% sure.

Any idea why Google Maps or Waze doesn't pass though audio? (not to highjack thread)

Only way is to be listening to music on the phone while using Google maps.

So when you download scout GPS and add it to your entune..does that mean your data always has to be on to use the gps?

Is this some evil plan of Toyota to force us to use their app?

I never use vehicle navigation. Phone apps are always updated and much more responsive. Waze is one of the best out there in my opinion and is far easier to manage on the fly rather than having to stop to adjust your crappy in-vehicle navigation system.

I will echo one of the above post. Buy a Garmin GPS unit and store in it the console when not in use. They have free updates and guess what...... .....When you dont have cellular service you can still navigate. We were in Wyoming last week and would have been up a creek without a paddle because we had no Cell service. There are still a lot of places in the US where you have spotty cell service and a GPS unit will still work.

You could also get a phone mirroring harness and adapter from beat sonic and it should mirror whatever you have on your phone to the SR5 headunit screen ie waze, google maps, maps (iphone) etc....

    Goodluck!

Waze and Google Maps (owned by same company) used to play navigation audio over Bluetooth, but many consumers prefer it separate, so now they only play navigation through the phone speakers or auxillary cable.

I'm still trying to figure out how to get Scout on my head unit, I don't think they all come compatible...

I will add one more reason to have stand alone GPS, I run Garmin. I have saved locations from years past, and trucks past. Pretty nice to be able to look up that off grid hunting camp I went to 6 years ago and saved in case I got invited again. Cell service at these off grid camps is often pretty spotty.

Scout sucks!!!! I prefer integrated Nav and I hate using my phone for GPS (unless through CarPlay) and the Scout app/Nav drove me nuts. I swapped my headunit our for one with Entune Premium with integrated nav. If OEM headunit with integrated Nav wasn't an option I would have gone with a Garmin. I wasn't ready (I really mean my wife wasn't) to pony up $1000 for an aftermarket unit with CarPlay or nav but that is also an option.

Oh,did I mention that Scout sucks and is the most useless feature ever put in a vehicle

    I use Waze.

I have tried to use Scout, and I find the following to be drawbacks (If I am making user-errors, please point them out):
-Syncing my phone app to the head unit is frequently difficult. Even with everything updated.
    - operation of the app while driving is limited.
-you can’t just activate Scout and see yourself driving in the map in real time. You must use a destination.

There may be more. I was disappointed. I’ll try again and see if I have missed anything or if I have a change of heart.

I've attempted using Scout myself and have found that it is only turn by turn navigation. Not quite sure why but annoying nonetheless.

I'm going to have to do something, listening to XM today and navigating around Atlanta I missed a turn because I couldn't hear my phone (you don't want to miss a turn around Atlanta). I just don't get why i can hear all over sounds off my phone, even clicks but navigation notices don't play.
