    Mystery Pink fluid Help
2016 Tundra 5.7 4x4 Limited 86K miles. No known issues with my engine or trans, runs great as usual.
Got under my truck today to look around, I was surprised to see a dried (cooked on) pink substance on my transmission??? This pic is taken from under the front of the truck , and its dripping down the drivers side. The black pan you see is my engine oil pan for reference.
This was not present last year when I was under there installing a CAT protector shield, and wasnt noticed on last oil change. Never noticed any puddles in driveway.
Nothing is visable when looking down from under the hood,
By the way its baked on there , It appears it came from the top center of the transmission and flowed down the drivers side.

Any Ideas on what it can be???????

Also how is your coolant level in the reservoir? That dried on stuff looks salty

That’s coolant. There’s some crossover tubes on the rear of the motor and the heater core back there.

This is probably the valley cooling plate leaking down the back side from what Ive seen on the forums here. From under the intake but that seems like quite a bit. Maybe check it while running, hot, and coolant system pressured up from underneath the truck and see if dripping somewhere.

thanks for the replies so far.
Just checked the coolant reservoir and it is 99% empty.
I now do remember seeing this same almost empty reservoir level 3 weeks ago, and I filled the reservoir to the proper full line.
The truck is still warm from being driven about 90min ago, I just removed the radiator cap, and there was coolant all the way up to the cap in the thermostat water neck.

Is there a chance the radiator cap can be bad causing this?
maybe its taking coolant from the reservoir as it needs it, but when the truck it turned off hot the bad cap wont let the coolant purge back into the reservoir, and the built up pressure is leaking in the intake manifold valley or a connection in there ??.
tomorrow I will start it up with the radiator cap off and see if it gulps the coolant in the waterneck as the thermostat opens, then top off radiator with coolant, put the radiator cap back on and fill the reservoir to full line, and watch it over the next few days.
Maybe get my radiator cap tested as well tomorrow , and/or just buy a new one.

    thanks ,
any other ideas, suggestions are greatly appreciated

I agree with those above. It's for sure coolant. My guess it's the heat exchanger that sits in the valley under the intake manifold. It seals down with FIPG (RTV) and there are O-rings sealing the tube which connect it. When the exchanger leaks it leaves the considerable pink crusty mess down the back of the engine and it flows down on and around the transmission bellhousing. Not too terrible of a repair to reseal.

As @Tundra1988 and @Tundra Chief posted it is coming from the valley. You can definitely throw on a new radiator cap but the valley reseal will have to be done.

It is coolant, and it looks like a valley plate leak for sure. It will run you about $1000 at an independent shop.

    This is mine:

Did that happen on your 2016 or 2021?

Side note: If it smells like something sweet with a tinge of nasty is burning, you’re cooking ATF fluid. ATF wouldn’t dry (at all really, just burn or stay wet), that way.

    Thanks for the replies.
It is dry, not wet and I am familar with both smells , it is coolant.
And after seeing your replies and doing a little research on the toyota forums and youtube , I guess it is a semi common problem on the 5.7 refered to as heat exchanger / coolant valley plate leak. Looks like it will need to be re sealed.

I just call the local Toyota dealer sploe to service manager explained the problem and stressed it is a a common problem on the 5.7 and asked if I could get a rough estimate of repair cost. They wont do it over the phone and want to charge me $195 to look at it and then give me a quote.
shouldnt this common repair be in their system in regards to time invloved where they can give me an accurate quote?????

I'm sure that job will be in the Toyota system with a set number of hours assigned to it. Tell them you'll bring it in for them to look at it if that $195 will be a part of the repair bill rather than a separate diagnostic fee.

I have now called 5 different dealerships , they claim the repair is not in the books so they cant give me a quote.
I explained it was a common problem on the 5.7 "coolant valley plate" re seal and to change o rings on the tube,
they all say the same thing about the 195 fee
Yes the 195 would be used toward the repair.
will do some more calling around

Take it to an independent shop that’s competent. Dealers are crooks and full of trainee techs.

The 2016. It started leaking sometime around 240K or thereabouts. I drove it about 10K before getting it fixed. It looked messy and smelled strongly, but the volume of lost coolant was minor enough I could have let it go forever if not for the smell.
