My new Crewmax is Top quality throughout, but Toyota overlooked storage areas!

Discussion in 'General Tundra Discussion' started by Mauigold8, Apr 5, 2019.

?

Why did my 2011 Double cab have more out of site storage areas? Why zero under rear seat storage?

  1. Final year of model production, Toyota didn't want to engineer better out of site storage

    14.3%
  2. Totally overlooked!

Why did my 2011 Tundra have more out of site storage areas, 2 glove boxes, areas in door armrests, and center console, space under rear seat to store hard hats, clothing, tools...

So less storage in the back seat area in a 19 crew cab than 11 double cab? Interesting ... do the seat backs fold down?

Yeah, I like the extra storage space in my 07 DC. Heck, my 09 Taco had lots of storage space too.

    Some.
Thanks for the link. I was discussing this very issue with my father today. He picked up a new '19 Limited Crewmax and the lack of storage compared to my '08 Crewmax is rediculous. Lots of wasted space behind the non-fold down rear seats. I commented on cutting out the foam for more room, like the finished look of this better.

With the new tech that everyone is wanting comes less real world options like storage and "oh Shit" handles. Wait till the next tundra arrives without a glove box

Ha ha ha.. yep. Had a 2002 before this, glove box had more room, and there were two storage areas under the rear seats. It was an SR5 so had driver bucket/passenger bench with a halfway decent fold down 'center child seat' back that opened into a center console box when folded down. Even with it's ability to not actually lock closed sometimes, making the contents '52 card pickup' all over the back seats if you lifted it quickly, I still liked the extra space. Yea, miss the under-seat storage but instead of spending $$ to add it, I put the money into a shell and bought a tool box for back there.
Sometimes the tiniest storage is missed the most. No ash tray- so now I have to stuff my candy wrappers in the cup holder.
As for some of the small stuff, get a little bag and stuff gloves and duct tape and whatever small stuff in it and put it under the back seats. I found that a small fire extinguisher fits great under the rear seat as well. The seat will hold it in place.

This was the biggest problem for me when I was ready to retire my 2004 A/C. I worked at Toyota at the time and when the 14 came out, I along with my parts manager started drooling over it. We had one in the show room and were trying to figure out why when we pulled on the strap at the top of the seat, it would not release the seat back, since that is how the 2007-2013 CrewMax rear seat worked. When we finally pulled out the owners manual out of the glove box(after 15 minutes, lol, who reads those anyways), we found out that the seat folded up and they did away with the cool slide and recline feature. It took me almost a year of trying to find a left over 2013 or a good used one, that I finally gave in and bought my 2014 CrewMax. After driving for a couple of months, I was on the freeway, and the traffic came to a screaching halt. My trailer ball mount came flying out from under the seat and slammed the back of the console. I started to figure out a way of making storage, and I took a piece of particle board, and made the cutouts in the floor. I wanted metal boxes to go into the particle board, so I went to the laser shop that my daughter works for and we ended up with the metal under seat storage that we currently sell. Then we designed the plastic box that is mentioned in one of the other posts. Now we have our long box which allows storing long guns. My understanding is the handle was removed due to safety, during certain crashes the drivers head would contact it.

A friend of mine was in an accident years ago and the emergency brake peddle rode up her shin and embedded in her thigh. Had to cut the peddal and ship her and peddle to the hospital for removal. Everyone knows driving is hazardous. I'm sure that banging my head off the poop handle is going to be the least of my worries.....:annoyed:

Yeah....my wife's 2012 Camry is pretty teched out too but, the Blind spot Monitoring system, the built in trailer break controller, the tailgate rear camera, the upgraded entune stereo, and of course the aerodynamic fins all add up so to equal out we lost storage and reclining rear seats. Maybe a few other things:notsure:

I won't put anything under the rear seat unless it is too big to slide out so it won't come flying out at me if I suddenly stop. My fire extinguisher, for example, doesn't move. I like that bottom storage box, don't see the point of storage if it doesn't have a lid to hold in the small stuff. It's also a good out-of-sight way to carry a shotgun and handgun while camping. I might just do something like that.
