Had something weird happen this morning. Went to remote start my truck. I have an aftermarket remote start with a separate fob. The lights lit up like usual and I waited to hear it start up. It didn’t, the lights were still on so I opened the front door and it was cranking but not firing. It would crank for a few seconds and then stop for a few seconds and try again. It took a few tries and finally started then shut right off and was trying again. So I went outside and put the key into the truck, tried to start it and had the same issue, cranking but no start. Didn’t notice the alarm indicator flashing in the dash or anything. Tried a couple times and finally it started right up and acted completely normal. I’ve started it twice since with no issues. Anyone experience this before? I was wondering if it didn’t recognize my key when j was manually trying to start it but like I said I didn’t see the flashing alarm symbol. Im not sure how the remote start works with the immobilizer to let the truck start and why that wasn’t working either? 2018 crewmax trd sport. My truck does not fall under the fuel pump recall. I spoke with Toyota and they couldn’t do anything without the truck there experiencing the issue.

Edit; I forgot to mention that when I physically went out to the truck and tried cranking it the check engine light was on solid. I know typically they come on when the key is first turned to the on position and go out shortly after. This was on solid until I finally got the truck to start. I scanned the codes after it started and there was nothing. Also, it seems as there may have been some confusion in how I worded it. The truck was cranking like normal but wouldn’t actually fire. It didn’t seem sluggish while cranking what so ever.

I would start with a test of the battery on your truck and see where that is on voltage

    LED headlamps/fogs; interior footlamps.
Also do other basic stuff like ensuring cables are tight on battery (whose overnight sitting voltage s/b at least 12.7 yet a really good battery will read well over 13 overnight).

Just curious, what was your fuel level and are you parked on a steep driveway? Mine does that when it’s 1/4 tank due to my slope.

For all saying battery, that would still allow the truck to crank and sound/act normal?

The way I read your post. Is you were saying it was not cranking and acting normal. Which is why I would start with a battery test because it’s cheap and easy to test That would be my first step in trying to diagnose this.

No they had a separate recall for select vehicles based on vin. This seems to be different.

No it cranked normal, just wouldn’t actually fire. It turned over and was cranking as fast as normal. Just no fire to actually start

I had the exact same problem as you. Check the wire connections for your aftermarket remote system. I soldered my connections and problem solved.

I’ll have to try and figure it out. I can’t recall the brand but it was in the truck when I bought it.

My truck is 16 sr5 excab with 150k. We recently had a hard cold snap, single digits typical for CO, the truck began struggling a little bit more each day to start. The auto start usually is just bump the key she roars to 1300ish rpm and is good to go. Same boat not a FFV, no recalls at the dealer for the fuel pump, sequoias and tundras excluded. Recently it got super cold, arctic stuff, and the cold start struggles began. Dealer told me I had bad gas, took some pepto, I’m set. Replaced the fuel pump, and fuel solenoid…plastic fuel line snapped was not forgiving.Ran heart and injector cleaner for a few tanks. No change. Issue cold starting was gradually getting worse, idle was lower upon start up only hitting 1000 rpms, long story shorter, I was a mechanic and being an alumni the college auto class is free and they found a bad relay dropping voltage. I did play with the fuel pump relay after replacing the fuel pump, looked new inside and out, but not the other one…the fp vsv relay for the fuel pressure control valve was charred inside and was like new outside of course. Amazon delivered a 12$, 2 pack of oem relays next day, yota dealer didn’t even have the relay stocked…very odd. Delivered late, so I replaced it after it set overnight, did it early in the morning before I went to work to be see if it made any actual difference. First bump of the key….She roared right up to 1300 rpms again, company vehicle so I took it on a 250 mile test, she never once took more than a second to fire up. Send those thank you cards and Amazon gifts cards my way. Good luck.

Had the exact same issue twice, about 6 months apart. I also had installed a remote start. Dealer could not duplicate it. So I removed the remote start just to rule that out. Have read multiple accounts of this happening on 2020+ tundras with oem remote starts. Seems to have something to do with the immobilizer, not worth having the remote start to worry about it happening again and it being the fault of something aftermarket. Good luck.

I bought the truck with the remote start installed. Never an issue until then. It rolled over perfectly fine, just wouldn’t fire. Then it finally did and I haven’t had an issue since.

Same exact issue. Would just crank and crank and crank. Then about 30 minutes later started no problem. Every similar situation I read about the person had a remote start, either oem or aftermarket. I’m just waiting now to see if it happens again.

Please let me know if you ever experience it again. I like my aftermarket remote start because the truck doesn’t shut off when the doors opened. It only has happened the one time so far. Hopefully it was a one time thing lol

I’m gonna make a post if it happens again, and I’m not letting Toyota give the truck back to me until they figure it out. I live in California so remote starting was costing me too much money in gas lol so I’m fine without it.

This issue happened to me again today. Stopped to pickup my son from preschool and the truck would not start again. 80 minutes of attempting to start the truck every 5-10 minutes and the battery eventually died. Hooked up the jumper and the truck started no issue. Back at the dealer under platinum warranty. I have nothing aftermarket in the electrical system but a subwoofer. If they can’t fix it I’ll ask them to buy it back, it has happened 3 times with my kids in the car.
