2021 limited, TRD off road with push button. 11k miles.

I used the remote start function, but when I got in the truck it didn’t shut off immediately like usual. It was still running for about 3-4 seconds after I sat in the drivers seat so I shifted into drive. It then shut off like I expected but I couldn’t start it again.

it did detect the key, a button press would take it into accessory mode, but then with my foot on the break pressing the button did nothing to turn the truck over. It didn’t even shut off accessory mode. The only thing that would shut off accessory mode was hitting the lock button inside or on the remote. I tried for 5 mins straight. I even walked away/back with the key to try and “reset” and nothing. I should also add, the brake pedal felt very stiff this entire time. I could only press it down an additional half inch or so.

After about 5mins of trying, it miraculously started and has been starting fine since. Was I just doing something wrong? It’s my first keyless rig

    Do you think that’s

    a)possible with a 4mo old truck

    b) it would still start remotely and then power everything else still while trying?

    genuinely wondering, thanks for responding!

I'm no expert but these Tundras do seem to have weak batteries and do very weird things as they get low on charge. Can't hurt to have an auto shop load test it

Have you added anything to the truck? I assume the remote start is from the factory? Added an OBD2 monitor or anything like that? Nothing plugged into USB ports?

I know its Toyota but this is why i wanted an SR5 with an actual key. I just dont trust these pushbutton starters. My dad had a Kia with a pushbutton and every so often, it just wouldnt work and he had to sit around the parking lot for 15-20 minutes until it decided to work.

To be completely honest, it had a breathalyzer wired in for the first two months of its life…. Maybe the installers didn’t wire the ignition back in properly and it’s shorting?

The thing with radio frequencies is interference. You may not ever have any, you may encounter everyday.

Yeah, could be. Or they could have left something behind that's drawing power. I'd pop the hood/get under the dash and see if there are any rogue wires around.

I'd check the key fob battery, contacts and buttons for clean and smooth action too.

Also FWIW, if I inadvertently triggered the safety shutoff on my prior vehicle's alarm system, the restart was usually delayed or rough.

Got it, this could definitely be it too as I matched my key fob cavalry blue ;) so I’ve been inside there and probably have bad contact etc

Thought I read somewhere... if you are having problems with the smart key you need to hold the key fob next to the stop/start button and try it again or hold it there 5 seconds... I'll try to find it and post it..

if all else fails... disconnect the Neg side of the battery and wait a few min... reconnect and see if that resets.. Ctrl-Alt-Del

It shut off while in drive, but I put it in park (confirmed by my DIC) and it still didn’t matter

Check battery terminals for tight connections. Have heard of bad batteries coming out of the factory.

If the brake pedal was a bit stiff, and it was going into accessory mode when you hit the button, it was probably just the stiff brake pedal not being depressed enough to kick it into start mode. I've had a few Toyota smart key vehicles and have had that happen, just a firmer push on the brake pedal and no issues. Not sure on the remote start extended running, my understanding of the factory remote start with smart key is it will die when the door is opened.

100% but apparently from this post gremlins live in Toyotas too, although a far smaller population.
