A little more information would be helpful to help you. Does the engine start and run? Did you replace the battery or charge it and verify it's still good? Did you check for chewed wires from rodents?

The reason I changed the alternatorwas the other night when I was driving my lights went dim and I lost all power..it would start right up after a jump ...but drain the battery very fast and then die again

Those red tops are sometimes problematic.

Sounds like you have a grounding issue. Remove and clean all grounds you can find.

Most definitely.. also might help if I tell you a few months back the battery had shifted in the engine compartment and the ground cable broke on the fender going to the battery and when that happen the wire on the firewall going to the block burned up. I did replace it .. but it wasn't the same gauge wiring but does not look like it has hurt it since then. Could that cause and issues not being the same Gage wire ?

I suspect more than one ground burned up. I would check the grounds in the cabin. There is one on each side under the plastic kick panel. White and black wires. Most of the dash gauges ground on the left side under the kick panel. May be a good place to start looking.

    Perhaps this will help.

I’m not an electrician, but your new(er) grounding wire you replaced should be at least the same gauge or slightly bigger than the OEM COPPER braided.

Clean up the contact surfaces before reinstall. Electrical grease helps if you have it.

Not to hijack but since I bought my truck, this ground cable has been disconnected. No issues running what so ever. What is it needed for or what does it ground?

Seems to be the ground for the battery. Double check and make sure yours is missing and if so reconnect. Transient current flow can be a silent killer of all things effecting bearings, transmission, etc.

It's not that it is necessarily needed but there are a few reasons veh, planes, etc have numerous chassis grounds. All the different gnds(5 under my 2004 engine bay) helps keep the power clean, and reduce noise. All of our computers/sensors love it as clean as possible. By allowing for multiple grounds closest to each crucial "noise maker" if you will, you're able to ensure cleaner power. AC or DC in our case, want's to take the shortest possible path thereby not having to fight for a clean gnd.

Thanks for following up. I wonder why it blew? Maybe that battery shift situation you had?

That was it..when I took it out was very brittle ..also the 7.5 amp was blown ..but I fixed that one earlier..now everything is working .. alternator charging .. radio works AC works ..windows work .. instrument panel working all except the speedometer...that ended up being the vss. Also I took the time to put bigger ground wires going to the fire wall to the engine..and the one one fender to the battery... and replaced the red top battery with a stock replacement.. decide to do a little extra TLC ..new nkg iridium plugs..new denso coil. fuel filter...I think when that red top battery shifted and ripped the ground battery on the fender then made the ground going to the engine block to the firewall burn up . Because multiple fuses to go including that big 120 amp .
