Used the MUD setting a bunch yesterday on some really goopy BLM and FS roads due west of @Coal Dragger territory (saw a few of his trains making deliveries on the way up). Really improved the drive. This was the kind of mud where the truck would just slide with no warning. I used the snow setting a few times in the winter also. I didn’t think I would use these really, but having them has been fun. I need to research what the MUD setting does - it felt like it was in tow/haul mode or Sport (of course coupled with 4H) so extra throttle response and higher RPM shift sequence?

Does anyone have any details on exactly what systems are adjusted in these modes?

Also looking forward to when the original tires are worn out so I can beef it up a little there. We are at almost 24k and the tires are wearing pretty good, so I expect they will be shot by 40k. That would have helped quite a bit.

Picture does no justice to mud caked underneath. I am going to break out the pressure washer at home. Super fun few hours, we took a detour back from Medicine Lodge to Ten Sleep and ran into a SXS convention or something, like 20 or 25 of them all blazing on the 1 lane road. That looked pretty fun also!

On the way over from Buffalo in the morning, we had snow on Powder Pass which is only like 9600 feet or something; pretty impressive for late June.

So in one day we had snow, mud, high speed highways, mountain passes, and A/C & heat running. The truck is very capable and performed very well.

Awesome post! I love the MTS too. I live in a very snow filled region and used the snow setting all last winter to great effect. Mud has also been excellent during hunting season. Here is some information I dug up, I will watch this thread for more! Thanks again for your post.

And then there's Multi-Terrain Select and Crawl Control. In the 2022 Tundra, Multi-Terrain Select works just like it does in any other Toyota vehicle. When activated, a turn of the knob lets you select from several different modes, including Sand, Mud/Rut, Rock Crawl, etc. These different modes tailor throttle response, transmission shift mapping, and even steering response to the desired trail condition. For example, Sand mode gives more instant throttle response while holding transmission gears longer in an effort to maintain wheel speed, while Rock Crawl dampens throttle response for a more controlled approach to obstacles.

I believe it also changes traction control settings. In my Tacoma TRD OR, A-TRAC is turned in when an MTS mode is selected. A-TRAC used to be a separate button but now it’s only available as part of the MTS. I assume Tundra is the same...

Random but can anyone here who has MTS look under their hood and see what ABS module they have? Might be retrofitting the MTS module on mine and want to make sure I’ve got the right one.

Toyota Tundra equipped with MTS (Multi-Terrain Select), the system is designed to optimize traction and stability for off-road driving by adjusting throttle response, wheel spin, and braking based on terrain conditions.

    How MTS Works:
    • It lets you choose from multiple terrain modes, typically:
      • Mud

      • Sand

      • Rock

      • Dirt

      • Auto or Deep Snow (varies slightly by trim)
    • Each mode tweaks the engine response, traction control, and brake modulation to suit the terrain.

    • It works with systems like Crawl Control and A-TRAC (Active Traction Control) to keep you moving smoothly and safely off-road.

I used my deep snow mode for the first time the other day and was also impressed. I figured they were pretty much a gimmick.

If nothing else I enjoyed having all traction control turned off with just 1 button without stopping and doing the 3 second press. It also didnt bog the truck down when you hit really deep stuff as it does in just 4hi.

This winter I drove 75km on bush roads in 18" of fresh powder and I was upset I forgot to test the deep snow setting. I know now it would have helped.
