So I am going to replace my head unit. I dont want a sub yet or replace the other speakers yet.
Looking for stereos is like trying to decide on tires wheels or lifts.
I know I want camera compatible, XM/SIRIUS ready, navigation on the fence with that option. Steering wheel interface, USB ports for charging and thumb drive usb port for addition music.

Does anyone make one that has a built in amp? Or do I stay away from that?

So far I have looked at Kenwood, Alpine, Sony and a couple others.

Who has something with those options I have mentioned and let me nosey and ask how much you paid?

So far I have seen between $249 and $1000. So let's just say, in that price range, to include installation.
My phone is Android but, I'm not too keen on the tablet looking thing.

Pat, have you checked out Crutchfield? They will give you advice on the perfect setup for you for free w/o any hard sales tactics. I personally would stick with a Kenwood but that’s my preference.

They all technically have a built in amp. Deck power is like 22 rms 50 max x4, which is more than the oem deck.

Thanks the only one to really mention that in the descriptions was Sony. So I can check that block. Thanks Jason.

What @ninjajay said about 4 channels x 20-22 RMS. Depending on the head unit manufacture you can get ones with +/- the 20 watt RMS so when you’re researching the headunits you like, just be aware what they are rated at.

    I feel for you too.
I'm fine with keeping the head unit. I did get the sub box from Fox Acoustics and two 10" Kicker subwoofers from Crutchfield. I know if i get better speakers and an amp to power everything i would be set.

Being on this forum got me the knowledge about lifts, springs, leafs, intakes, shocks and wheels and tires. Ohms, watts, tweeters, subs? Nuh-uh, all foreign to me. Plus got to have the right wiring to make it all sing!
I found a shop in LA, they've worked on Tundras and have even installed the sub box from Fox. I await until the end of the day to pick up what will hopefully be my much improved Tundra stereo. I can hardly wait!! :goingcrazy:

I was/am on the fence about what to do. So I decided to do the head unit first, then the speakers. My hearing isn't that great anymore, as far as frequency ranges go. Just trying to figure out which one suits me best.

Stereo upgrades: -HU, Pioneer Mvh bs501 -Tweeters, Peerless(vifa) XT25SC90-04 1" Dual Ring Radiator s in custom pods. -Mids, Silver Flute W17RC38-04 6.5" Wool Cone Woofer. -Subwoofer, American Bass XR12. 2.3^3ft tuned @33-34 hz. -Tw Amp, Old School 2ch Sony. -Mids Amp, Old School Autotek Sx275. -Sub Amp, Old School Memphis 16-pr1.1000 -Zero gauge big 3. 0 and 4 gauge copper runs to amps.
I dont think there are any headunits out that offer those features and have an internal amp bigger than the standard 22 watts max per channel, 14 rms per channel.

One thing to keep in mind, many of the newer headunits have some sound processor features. Pioneer for example, has many that will let you set crossover points independent speaker levels, ect.. Those options will let you get more volume from a speaker by reducing bass.

Cut the bass from the front door speakers and let them play more on the trebble side. Let the rear door speakers handle the mid/sub range.

It is a toss up though. It may or may not do what you want sound wise but if you are going to get a headunit regardless, then its not really a risk.

Oh yeah, keenwood and pioneer are your two main options. Jvc is good but they are in the kenwood family and kenwood currently is the flag ship brand.

Alpine, i think, is still all about iphone.

I have heard and seen nothing but good things about James and tech12volts. I am sure he would advise me as good if not better than Crutchfield, but I would be in same spot, having someone with the knowledge and and experience to install all components

Hint he wired my whole truck including my Viper remote start/alarm. He used to live in Vegas but has family down there so he moved about a year ago.

Dustin, i think you're asking me?

I provided the shop with a subwoofer box from Fox Acoustics and two 10" Kicker subs. They are installing that and 6x9 diamond audio coaxial speakers for front, infinity tweeters for the front, image dynamics 6.5 for the rear, alpine 5 channel amp, signal converter audio control. And the owner is going to tune everything.

I'm working on my head unit replacement this afternoon:

    2019-02-11.jpg

Pioneer AVH-W4400NEX - went this route for wireless CarPlay/Android Auto. I've got all of the adaptors and modules to use the factory GPS and satellite radio antennas, steering wheel controls, etc. You can see how clean that looks in the clusterfuck of a wiring harness on the right... Should be basically plug-n-play from here though. I'll post an update when I get everything in.

Edit - I paid about $680 for everything, but am doing the install myself as that's more of a hobby of mine.
