Hello everyone I’m new here. I just bought a new 2024 Tundra limited with the TRD OFF ROAD package. I’m planning a trip to Moab Utah, specifically Hurrah pass and chicken corners trail. I have been watching a lot of videos on YouTube and it looks beautiful but some parts of the trails look really narrow. I was wondering if anyone here have done those two trails in a Tundra, all the videos I have watched are Jeeps, Tacomas…. I just really want to know if it’s safe to do those two trails on a Tundra?

Those trails are mild compared to most in the area - perfectly suitable for a Tundra.

I can’t wait to go back to Moab. You need to hit Long Canyon if you want to drive under the boulder.

Ohhh, moab, thats a bucket list place for sure. Maybe rent a Wrangler and explore, that would be awesome.

The beautiful thing about Moab is you can find something both doable and challenging for nearly any rig. You can run stuff like Schafer, Long Canyon, Hurrah Pass, etc all in a stock truck. Once you have skids and sliders, more options open up. Once you have high clearance bumpers - you can go pretty much anywhere a Jeep on 35s can go.

I have stock drivetrain, 35s, about 2.5” of lift, and the high clearance bumpers. I was able to do Hells Revenge without pulling the winch line.

Oh, cool. Well, I'll be sure to get full skid plates and some sliders before I go. Just have to get the wife onboard with driving there

I would love to take a roadtrip from here to lets say Palm Springs and make a few stopovers in a few choice areas. Its just the wife is a civil engineer so she is go go go all through the nice months with her construction crews, I really do not want to travel through the winter. I'd rather take a plane to somewhere with a pool bar when the snow starts to fly up here

Moab is a fun place with trails that a Subaru to a trailer queen can do. The group I would go with wore the place out (3-7 trips per year..for about a decade). Haven't been back since we did a photo shoot for Crawl Magazine.

Make sure your vehicle is secure with its contents. Lots of sticky fingers.....

We did it last year, such incredibly beautiful country.

And SO MANY places you can just walk up and stand on the edge of a 1,000' cliff if you're so inclined.

We flew in and rented a car due to time constraints, but I'd love to go back in truck & trailer to camp and explore, with a little light wheelin'.

If you fly in, don't make the rookie mistake we did of flying into Salt Lake City, it's a really long drive to Moab. Better off flying into a different state, duh. Grand Junction CO would've saved us many hours of driving.

We did a guided SXS tour of Hell's Revenge that was really fun. They outfit the rigs with better rollcage, bigger SUPER sticky tires, radios, etc. and encourage you to get after it.

Wifey drove the second half and made me so proud. :bananadance:

We did Schaeffer Trail in the rental "Jeep" Compass. (What a POS)

Wifey was not a fan of Schaeffer Trail.

Really? I go multiple times a year for a decade now but never had any issues with theft. Good to know though.

I don't think you'll have any issues on hurrah or chicken corners. Although watch for the SxS's that drive way too fast on blind corners.

Last time I was in moab, I was on a switchback trail and the SxS's were drifting and spinning their tires on every corner.

Thankfully we hardly saw any - one of the upsides going mid-summer I guess.

A stock truck will definitely scrape the bumper/exhaust. TFL has tons of videos showing what kind of marks / damage you can expect.

What's "TFL"? There are bypasses and you have to pick the right line for your rig or have a good spotter, but no, you will not "definitely scrape" - just walk the obstacle and take the bypass if you feel nervous. Not saying if you don't take a suitable line for your rig you won't scrape...

I've done everything from 4x4 to mountain biking the entire White Rim Trail, sleeping on the ground at night I don't know if there is a central calendar but it can be crowded if your visit coincides with one of the many large groups that go there. It's become kind of a bucket list tourist thing. I gravitate more towards SW Colorado. Less spoiled and the way things used to be in the way back machine.

A basic stock Ram 1500 is not the same as a Tundra with the TRD Off-Road package. I'm not impressed with the lines that guy in the video was taking either. That said, it's not a one-way trail like Black Bear Pass or the like. You can always turn around. I definitely agree with using OnX though!

From a ground clearance and approach/ departure angle standpoint - they’re essentially the same.

Be sure to shoot some video when you run it!

Oops, yep they did that a couple of years ago. It was two way until then, and I haven't been there since then. Thanks for correcting me on that. Still, I would more compare a Tundra with a TRD Off Road package to a late model IFS Land Cruiser than to a basic stock 4x4 Ram. Not quite the same, but closer...

Me personally, I wouldn't run Fins in a stock Tundra even if it has a TRD package. There are a lot of vertical angles that both the front and the rear of the truck won't like. The local Jeep club Red Rock 4wheelers rate the trail as a 4 and so does Cruise Moab (large Toyota event). If you had steel bumpers and sliders I'd say roll with it otherwise there is a section on the north side of Sand of Flats road that once you start going down, there is no by-pass and you have to keep going.

If you want a real thrill ride, take 6 up to Soldier Summit and back. You risk it all to make through in one piece!!

Well I would call that the wrong line, even though it doesn't appear it's dragging anyway. Doesn't even appear to have the TRD Off Road package either. But hey, there are some trails rated easier than that, I would just suggest if you take a milder trail and get bored, try a 4/10 (or 3/5, depending on who you listen to).

Can't do it all in just a couple of days, anyway. But, you can always go back. Or, rent a heep or side-by-side and do Hell's Revenge!

My only regret is I didn't do Hell's Gate in my 40...

You got me - stock SR and I stole the wheels.

The goal of the pic was to get as close to scraping both bumpers without doing any real damage. The rope guard scratched pulling up from there. Here is the shot -

Count yourself lucky. To be honest, I have not been back for 14 years. No reason to. We have better and more hardcore trails in Montrose, CO with less BS. Grand Junction CO is another hot spot for theft in the hotels. Now most on here are not into hard core Offroad...but some are into camping and SxS's.

Most of these reports are bike theft (since most hotels will not allow bikes inside) or vehicle break ins. My last Santa Cruz Tall boy Carbon was not cheap. To buy one today it's over 9K.

It could be where you are staying. We used to stay at Canyonlands campground. All extra vehicles/trailers had to be parked down below. Conveniently for thieves there is a bridge coming from the hotel parking lot next to the campground lower parking. We had two guys stay down in the lower parking lot overnight and caught some of them. Some weird noises were coming from the area.

We stopped staying in town since Moab brewery was all right, but not worth the risk/work. One can rent a complete working ranch with four houses on it for pretty reasonable just south of town. It ended up being 300.00 per person for the week. That was not bad.
