Did an oil change on my 2020 Tundra 2WD crewmax. 52,618 miles, bought used at 51,167 last month. Just changed the oil so I know it was done right (bought from a chevy dealer. They used the wrong plug gasket).

I cut open the filter media and found sparkles here and there throughout the pleats. What does this mean for my engine?

I replaced the oil with mobile one 0W-20 heavy duty truck oil for towing and used a nappa platinum filter.

attached photos, hard to show the sparkles without video so i circled the ones i can see in the still images

I wouldn’t worry about it too much yet.

Just run the current change for 5k miles and see how it looks then.

i recall seeing similar on mine after the first and second oil changes from new.

Yeah but this is used. Had 51k miles when I got it last month. Use it exclusively for work to tow my 4000lb pressure washer trailer. Weighs 8000 with water: i only ever tow about 100gallons in the tank

    Some.
If you are concerned, get it tested by Blackstone.

Yup, what he said. Do an oil sample. They can tell if there is too much metal in your oil.

I think a little bit of metal is normal/ok. Keep an eye on it, as others have said do another change at 5k. Send it for analysis if you’re worried.

I agreed on sending it for an analysis. You can also get a magnetic drain plug to help pull any shavings away from moving parts.

How often did the previous owner change the oil? Any maintenance records? In any case, I wouldn’t worry about it until you have Blackstone look at the oil. The filter looks like it was doing its job…

I wouldn't be surprised if you are looking at the original filter. Lots of shady maintenance practices happening nowadays. Dealership service is not as it appears.

100% best way to know what kind of wear you might be dealing with. OP, send a sample of the oil to Blackstone for analysis. They will give you a report and let you know if you have any unusual wear or if you are within the norms.
