I checked my engine oil (2025 Tundra) at about 2600 miles and saw metal dust in the oil that came off of the dipstick. I decided that that was the end of that oil, and I wanted my first service early. I took it to the dealership, and they also saw lots of metal dust in the oil when they drained it. A master technician, then opened a case and consulted with a regional supervisory tech. They basically came back with no big deal, nothing has failed yet, we'll see how it goes.
Has anyone else had this metal dust issue in their new Tundra?

W/o pictures of how much metal was in the oil, we cant be of much help. Some break in material is normal. You got it documented, keep on keeping on.

“Metal dust” on your dipstick is a bad sign. I don't care if it’s brand new motor or not.

You should have asked for, or sent a sample yourself, for oil testing. That would have shown hard data.

No point ruining the present worrying about the future; it’s documented (not that it would matter within warranty coverage), if it fails, hopefully you have a good dealer that will fight on your behalf for heads and turbos in addition to the short block

Too late to help you any … I always do the first oil change in the 500-1K range. It is old school practice but brings me peace of mind.

Even a 500 mile oil change wouldn’t prevent issues. Shouldn’t be visible metal in the oil.

Gotta wonder what that poor oil filter looked like on the inside. Probably quite bedazzled.

My thoughts as well. Polishing compound breaking that engine in.

This is fact. Every new engine will shed some material during break-in. What matters is how much.

In this case, without pics, or better yet an oil analysis, any posts here are just speculation.

    Speculation? Yes.
    Justified? Yes.

Metal visible in the oil on the dipstick? Further metal identified and confirmed by the dealer?

I think we’ve moved beyond simple speculation. Now it is speculative as to the cause. Is it the ongoing issue, or is this something different?

Except for it should be trapped in the filter, not in circulation and on the sick.

Not necessarily. A new engine can continue to shed material for thousands of miles. Any shed material that was circulating thru the engine when it was shut off, right before an oil change, will drain to the oil pan, and will not be in the filter.

This is very common and expected. What matters is how much shed material, what the material actually is, and the size of the particles. In this case we don't know any of that.

Seeing a few tiny flakes on the dip stick would not alarm me at all. If it looked like it had been dipped in Christmas glitter, that's a different story.
