On this weeks episode of “What’s that Noise?”... when I turn my steering wheel, it sounds like metal washers falling on each other. I changed the steering rack bushing over the weekend, double checked everything and it’s all tight.

The sound seems like it’s coming from inside the steering wheel.

Any ideas of what it could be? I don’t have any issues turning, just this metal clicking sound that started yesterday.

    Appreciate you all!

Clicking while turning usually means CV axle.

I don't think anything back there would be making noise. How does the steering feel? Any work done recently?

I should clarify, it’s just 1 click. Turn left, sounds like a washer hitting another. Straighten the wheel and get 1 more click.

Steering is tight. Did replace the steering rack bushing over weekend.

Does it seem like this noise is inside the cab, or outside?

Inside and coming from the behind the steering wheel/dash area. I thought it might be the key in the ignition for a moment but couldn’t replicate the sound by moving the key.

Something hanging down and contacting the steering shaft when it's turning?

I’ll open up the portion behind the steering wheel this weekend to see if I pin point where the click comes from.

I'm wondering if maybe that steering boot thing that was a hot topic a few months back isn't torn and letting a new noise in since your bushing replacement. Like the bushings took the slop out and now your rack is making noise and coming inside.

Steering rack boots? Those are in good shape.

Found the source. This piece is loose. Not sure about where it goes but guessing it shouldn’t just be dangling on the steering shaft...

Anyone know what the part is or how I can go about learning how to fix it?

That sounds like a fun and inexpensive project...

They also tried to weld?... or possibly soldered it?...

Called a couple junkyards and one of them told me he has the ignition portion with the Key which I can use with the existing steering shaft. As in take off the “bubba’d”(no offense my dude lol) ignition portion from the steering shaft and put on the one they have.

    Does that sound right?

You can but you have to drill out the old one time use bolts either way, the column is being removed. I would replace the whole thing honestly out of fear there’s an different issue that caused this fuckery in the first place
