I have a 22' 1794 hybrid with about 15,000 miles. Since I have had it I have noticed that when I am stopped and the truck is still in gear there is a loud rattling and the RPM's are around 1000. If I put the truck in park the noise will go away. I only really notice the loud noise when I am at a drive through with the windows down where I am stopped and my foot is on the brake. I can hear the rattling off of the wall next to me. I am wondering if anyone else has had this issue. It does not do it all the time but seems like it occurs when I have been driving a lot during the day, ac running, etc.... does not happen on cold starts or if I have just started driving.

Its actually getting to be kind of embarrassing how loud the noise is and I can't believe this is normal. I brought it in to the dealership for regular maintenance and mentioned this and they said it was normal. But I know they couldn't recreate this noise and so I don't think they looked into it. Anyone have this happening as well? Solution?

I actually have video of the noise as I stuck my cell phone out the window at chick fila but I could not post video on forum.

Curious to hear the noise. Someone else on here was complaining of the high idle. 1000 rpm idle means the engine is charging up the battery which is drained by AC system. Engine kicks on when the hybrid battery is at two bars.

Rattle could be anything… some part resonating, something in the driveline, a loose skid plate, etc.

Wondering if it could be transmission related as it only does it when I am in drive and completely stopped. If I take my foot off the brake and idle away the noise goes away or if I put it in park the noise goes away... regardless it does not sound like a new truck should when you are completely stopped.

Thanks for the link. My sound is not so much a click and more of a rattling like something is loose but very similar and only other difference is its constant. In the video it was clicking at a certain pattern which mine is a constant and steady rattle. But I have to say sounds very similar to the other thread. I have experienced no lag or sluggish gear shifts and it still drives like a dream. Only issue I have had is this noise..

Yes that is exactly it! They told me the same exact thing. My wife drives the new 23 sequoia and there is no noise. Same engine.

I talked to 3 Toyota corporate case managers I told them that’s not normal even the master tech agreed that’s not normal but as long as they able to replicate the noise on another truck in my case they did, Toyota corporate would not do anything and say it’s normal.

At this point I don’t care anymore i can’t hear it if I keep the windows closed and if it breaks down the extended warranty will take care of it (I hope), I have relatives who own gmc and ford and my issues are nothing compared to what they have gone through.

That ticking sounds like a sewing machine, usually that’s related to direct injection pump. Is it only coming from transmission?

Could the noise be a little rock trapped on one of the plates or heat shields?

I had a rattle with my Element at idle and it was a rock.

I was the one complaining about it, on my 23 limited trd hybrid. Read your huge owners manual and it states that clicking sounds are normal. I think it is a fail safe to save the electric motor from damage when all engagement parameters are not met. My does the same thing, I read the owners manual and it said that clicking sound is normal. So I'm like roll with it, I guess. Toyota engineers are pretty smart people

yes and it only happens when the hybrid battery runs low and needs charge, if I give a little gas it goes away but as soon as the rpms drop the rattle comes back even if I cycle the AC on and off the noise goes away for a little bit, I now know exactly how to replicate the noise, my 50 miles commute is the same for 5 days of the week and it always makes the noise at 3 different spots where traffic is heavy and the battery runs low, one spot is only 3 blocks away from my dealership I stopped by one day with the noise the master tech confirmed is coming from the hybrid unit between the engine and the transmission.

Test drove 2 I force max and we were able to replicate the noise by running the hybrid battery low.

like I said now I drive the truck like a truck and stopped worrying about this noise and the clunk noise over bumps and rough road.

Yes, when your Max battery meter is at 2 bars, the ac on, hot stop and go traffic then the RPMs raise to around 1k which I think of as rough idle and the hybrid unit starts making those noises. This is a big truck, probably the largest hybrid vehicle on the market. I'm thinking it is quirky thing that it is going to do. I was concerned until I read the owners manual and it said it was normal.

2023 sequoia. Mine does the same thing, AC on full I get a 1k idle. It’s kind of annoying. I was about to mention it at my 5k mile service.

Mine does it too. Asked the dealer during my 10k maintenance. They said they hear it and to schedule a time to bring it back for the hybrid technician to look into it.

I have a 2022 limited with the exact same problem. I recently took it to the dealer who identified the source of the rattle is from inside the muffler. Some sort of manufacturing defect. The dealer has ordered a replacement muffler.

My 2023 sequoia 6k miles is starting to rattle. Have we officially confirmed the exhaust? I’m going to go underneath it today.

I have a 2024 tundra non hybrid and a 2024 sequoia pro hybrid and they both make the same noise I can hear it in drive thru I took them both to the dealership yesterday lucky me they can not duplicate the noise but I have a short video clip on the sequoia making the noise. I guess as long as I have them documented just to cover my ass.

Read your manual folks, this is a normal sound from the hybrid when the battery is low.

Don’t find this to be true either… it does it regularly. Unless your definition of low is less than 70-80%..

Nope it happens at 1or 2 bars on the battery indicator, and the hybrid battery is low then the truck will high idle and make a pinging noise. If you have some other noise then it could possibly bot be from the hybrid system.
