I have been to three different mechanics and this problem is still not solved. First two said nothing was wrong, and the last one got me for new CV joints. Truck is still making the sound. I'll just have to keep investigating I guess. Has anyone had to replace the lower ball joints on their 1st gen. Could this possibly be the cause of the sound?

Can anyone please point me in the right direction if they have had this problem

Make sure your alignment cams are torqued.

Damn, I’ve got a clunk type thing going on to. It could very well be loose alignment cams, I had that happen on my tacoma, drove me nuts. It could also be bushings; sway bar, steering rack or lower control arm.

While replacing both CV axles, my mechanic noticed and replaced bolts missing from BOTH lower ball joints. Two bolts were missing from each one! All the noise, clunking and looseness went away once new bolts were installed.
