I think it would probably be cheaper to find a 4 x 4 truck that you like. Otherwise you’ll need a donor for sure. Sorry to be that guy LOL

Hate to say this, but if you have to ask you probably aren't prepared to undertake something like a 4x2 to 4x4 conversion. No offense intended, its pretty complicated.

A job, some cash, and about 3-4 hours at a dealership and you can drive one home. :burnrubber:

Sorry, but that's going to be an easy swap. As others mentioned, probably not worth the hassle to convert. Sorry for the bad news.

I would doubt the frame is the same. That alone would be a massive job to swap. Maybe the mounts could be removed and the correct ones bought from Toyota but mounting them in the correct spot but not without plenty of work and having a 4wd frame to measure off of. Then there's the hit on value. I don't see many people wanting to buy a home converted 4wd vs a factory one for the same money. So that really means trying to find a wrecked one in a junk yard that has all the parts you need. A rolled over Tundra that runs and drives would be your best option. Then you could remove your cab and bed and put it on that truck. A lot of work.

The parts list is pretty long. Not worth the work unless you get all the parts for near free

    Transmission
New drive shafts front and rear
Trans case plus cross member I believe
    Front diff
    Spindles
    Cv shafts
    Wiring
    New ecu
    Many more little little parts

Ive thought about it many times as my truck is in prime mechanical condition. It doesn’t make sense to swap transmissions as that is half of the reason to keep my current truck. If im willing to gamble on a used transmission, I should just gamble on it in another entire vehicle

The amount of money you will probably have to spend on the conversion could just get you into a 4 x 4 truck with trading yours in. Or you spend the money on a real 4 x 4 rig made for hitting the trails. A small Toyota 4 x 4 pick up would be my choice.

I'm planning to do it on my first gen, but planning to gather parts over the next 2 or 3 years and do it if (when) my trans goes out. I'll do it by myself though so labor is free.

I figure parts will put me back around 3k. The average joe will pay that for a shop to swap a trans so doesn't sound painful.

First gen should be much simpler due to parts availability and less tech to deal with

It's expensive to convert a 2WD to a 4x4. Sure it can be done, but like everyone else has said... sell yours and buy a 4x4.
