I was wondering if i could pick the local tundras vet's brains. We've got two boston terrorists (10 and 11 years old), the 10 year old female has the tear marks under her eye, she also has some discoloration on her hands/wrists that she continues to lick. Anything to help clear both those up? The 11yo male has a little bit of the same discoloration on the top of his hand, and also likes to lick.
    here's the female:

On average, how much water should a 95 pound lab be drinking in a day?

1/2 that. Unless they are vomiting or having diarrhea really nothing to worry about tho!

If drinking more than 140 I would be concerned with diabetes, kidney disease, Cushing disease, psychogenic polydipsia(behavioral) or UTI. The ranking would depend on age, breed, sex, if neutered/intact and body condition.

Agree with @jaredmillerdvm and the concerns listed. However, Labs do have a tendency to drink a ton. I've had them all my life and I swear they will run and drink a lot when they're happy, which is usually all the time. But, if you've seen a change, then monitor and follow up with your vet.

So, in my experience, eye drainage is fairly common in certain breeds, including Bostons. However, if they are incessantly licking, it's probably due to allergies. Also, dogs get an endorphin release in the brain when they incessantly lick, which makes them feel good. They basically can become addicted to it. It will start as an allergy, then turn into a behavioral problem. Given their ages, I would try Cytopoint injections once a month. It will stop the itching, which may stop the licking and decrease the eye drainage. In some cases I will also add Prozac if I think there is a strong behavioral component.
Great picture btw. I love Bostons!

Thanks! Appreciate your input as well.

We lost one of our pups at the beginning of last year. His eating dropped drastically after that, but eventually came back to normal. Then recently he started delaying eating, as opposed to just going all out as soon as we put food in the bowl. With this water consumption has gone up. Nowhere near the 140 oz a day as @jaredmillerdvm has mentioned. He still eats just on his own time table in comparison to when we put it in the bowl. Sometimes he will skip a whole meal and itll still be in the bowl the following morning. Just a little concerning, maybe it was just the food flavor. We had bought a bag of lamb, instead of the usual chicken, cause store was out and maybe he just didnt care for it.

We also had family in town for the holidays and maybe he had gotten too many treats.

Not really sure whats going on but definitely monitoring it all more closely, without any treats.

    Thanks!
We bought some purpose made eye wipes that have helped clean them up a bit, but only a little. To me it's mainly a denial of their age.....doesn't really seem to bother them...
I'll look into that allergy med, maybe it could help. One over the counter remedy that I read about was rinsing the licking areas on the hands with hydrogen peroxide. Thoughts?

I would avoid hydrogen peroxide mainly because it can become an irritant if used too much. Also, if any skin infection is present, peroxide can actually damage skin cells and delay healing. Sometimes just using baby wipes can help soothe the skin if you're looking for an OTC remedy. Oatmeal shampoo can help as well.

Question for the Tundras.com in house Vets....I have a mixed breed puppy we rescued who is 9 months old. Today she came inside from the backyard limping with blood on her front paw and it looks like maybe she either broke a toenail or it’s going to fall out. She likes to dig and chase squirrels so we think she was digging or clawing at the fence to get a squirrel. So far the bleeding is minimal and we out her in her crate to rest and see how it does.

She just seems to be favoring it and bleeding is very minimal. Advice on whether we should take her in to our local Vet or just see how she does? I’ve not tried to touch it or do anything to it, she licks it now and then.

    Thanks for any information!

Sounds like it's just a broken nail. I would probably just see how she does if the bleeding is minimal. But, you need to keep her from licking it either with an e-collar or foot bandage. If she is still just as lame after 24 hours, then have your vet take a look at it. If lameness steadily improves, that's a good sign and the nail will just grow out over time.

Man, he's a real looker! I typically recommend waiting until at least 9-12 months old in Labradors. Earliest is 6 months. There is a lot of research that suggests that waiting until at least 18 months old is ideal to help prevent cruciate ligament tears down the road. Cruciate ligament development requires adequate hormones for proper development. Now, that being said, we all live in the real world and behavioral problems as they reach sexual maturity outweigh the ability to keep them intact for that long. It's just not realistic in most situations. I kinda split the difference and say 1 year, but most people do it between 6-8 months. The dewclaws can be done when neutering, but some dogs have dewclaws that have a bone attachment. These are better to do as early as possible because it's the equivalent of a toe amputation. Have your vet do a dewclaw exam to see if they can wait until neutering.

Appreciate the quick response - we'll keep an eye on her this evening and see how she's doing in the morning.

I have two rescues both have Great Pyrenees in the mix. The male (Chance) has single dew claws on his hind legs, and the female (Maggie) has double dew claws on her hind legs. We left them alone...I didn't want to risk any issues with removing them.
