As a straight male, I call it camping, and occasionally take the Tundra. The RTT was my buddies. Kings, Camburg Arms, Supercharger, 5.29s, 35s. Enough party to party, enough low key to not get attention from instawhores.

With all due respect, I've always thought overlanding was just car camping. Maybe I dont understand the correct meaning of overlanding.

:amen: I’m with you on this one. No disrespect intended to others, but I’ll always call it camping. Overlanding sounds like something Thurston Howell III would say with an extra stuff upper lip. That said, lots of really nice trucks are spawned from the hobby.

Why is the word camping better than the word overlanding? I see overlanding as a combination of backpacking and trunk camping. More transient than trunk camping but not as light as backpacking. And throw in some trail riding.
I am also rigging up for overlanding. It is a slow process for the financially challenged.

I always called it off-roading. Overlanding sounds yuppyish to me.

I designed it and built the front bumper myself! If you're interested, I'd be more than happy to send you the photos and dimensions for the steel

Also yes, that is a 4 tire inflation/deflation system that I also made myself, I have an Amazon list to everything included if you want that too

Some of ya'll are really "over" thinking the overlanding terminology.

Camping is camping, no vehicle is required for just camping.
Off-roading is just that, has nothing to do with camping.
Overlanding is generally a multi-day off-roading trip with camping at each stop, and usually not at a designated campsite. You can't do that in a minivan or with a giant travel trailer, and you can't cover much ground if you're hiking. There are people out there that overland from coast to coast and the top of North America to the tip of South America, mostly off-road and camping out of their vehicles each night. That's a little more than just camping or just off-roading.
The actual definition of the word overland is by land, so the airplane analogy is not even close. By land, by sea, by air... think about it.
Does the overlanding term get "over" used? Sure, but that doesn't mean its not a thing. You can call what you do whatever you want, but overlanding is still a thing.

I listened to this incredible podcast a few years ago...it was stories of real overlanders (at least in the sense that I understand it)...people who took years-long trips from the UK through Europe to Asia, the Middle East, and Africa; traveling by car (often a Land Cruiser) through foreign countries with almost no infrastructure. They lived mostly out of their vehicles, but stayed long enough to make friends with the locals, work temp jobs, and barter for food, showers, and an occasional stay in a hostel. Quite incredible stories, really. There were (are?) these kinds of overlanders doing the same sort of thing in the Americas...traveling from Canada and the US to the southern tip of Chile and Argentina.

Of course now, the term has been repackaged and commoditized for the American consumer. It basically means weekend car camping with an adventure twist. If you search the term on YouTube or Instagram, it seems impossible to do without spending at least $80k on a fully bro'd out Insta-camper vehicle that is shouting at least 8 different trendy brands at you from every photo angle (Toyota, C4, Icon, FrontRunner, Fox, ARB, RCI, Rotopax, etc...). You can even buy an Overland Bound™ medallion for what I think is an obnoxious amount of money to stick on the side of your modded truck or SUV. (Note: I wish I had thought of that.)

Because of the Instagram culture surrounding this kind of overlanding and the seemingly inevitable closing of off-grid dispersed camping areas due to the overcrowding of people taking pictures of their setups and filming rig rundown videos (gotta at least try to make a few bucks back on the 2nd mortgage you took out on that broverlander truck, you know?), I too have a bit of a bad taste in my mouth regarding the term "overlanding". It seems that something has been lost with the current application of that word vs the incredible stories from that podcast of world travelers who lived and worked alongside vastly different cultures as they drove across the globe.

Yeah, I like to camp out of my truck with my family off the grid. But I don't call it overlanding.

I get it, and certainly agree that the Instagram jackasses and "influencers" have totally commercialized and ruined the idea for everyone else. People can't just be content anymore. Everyone needs to be seen and heard, which is ironic when trying to go off the grid.
But regardless, overlanding is still overlanding. The pioneers that moved out west were overlanders, the nomads that moved all over the Middle East, Asia and Europe were overlanders, the folks you described in the podcast were overlanders, and there are still folks out there doing it. Its sometimes hard to stomach being connected to that YT/IG branding, but don't let them ruin a good thing.
Maybe just do it but call it #notoverlanding or something so the regular folks can still enjoy it without the bros and influencers getting in the way. Hell, look at what's happened to fishing, sport fishing, competitive fishing tournaments where you win ridiculous money for pulling in fish, all the sponsors and videos and whatnot... but when I go drop a line in the water I still call it fishing.

I think a better analogy than fishing is working out. Right now, I'm literally engaging in physical activity, flexing muscles in my hands and fingers as I type this and spending calories to do so, but I'm not working out. That term carries a different meaning, involving sets of controlled reps under some amount of resistance with sustained levels of elevated heart rate, etc...

Similarly, "overlanding" (mostly international travel by car, rail, bicycle, or motorcyle; often taking months or years by extremely long, legendary routes, requiring planning almost as long as the trip itself) historically carries a different meaning than just "traveling by land." My morning commute can be described by the latter but not the former.

Check out the Wikipedia page for Overlanding. Nowhere will you find mention of the weekend car camping thing that we like to call overlanding here in the US.

I do the off-grid car camping thing. Yeah, it's literally traveling "over land"...just like my commute to work. But it isn't overlanding...there's no extremely long, legendary routes, no passports needed, no traversing entire continents, etc. I just think we're diluting the term...
