For those of you who have purchased new from a dealership far from home, do you essentially forfeit any free maintenance coverage since it wouldn't be worth the travel? I've never bought new and have no clue how tied you are to the dealership you bought the new truck from. I assume warranty and recalls can be done at any dealership, correct? Appreciate any info here.

That is correct Toyota will honor and warrant any of their products under original maintenance at Any Dealership.
If you were to buy out of town or move to another town your covered.

You forfeit any special warranties that the dealership offers, but are still eligible for any manufacturer stuff at another dealer.

Ex. The dealership I bought my truck from offers a couple free oil changes with new vehicles. I won't be getting any of them unless I am just magically in the area again at the right time.

You generally don't want the cheaters working on your truck. Only as last resort. Read the horror stories here, there are many including my own. Most are just straight shady characters.

Dealerships, for example in 2018 I took my new 4Runner in for free oil change at about 500 miles. Took it back, brought it out, I checked the oil level and left, went again a few more times over the years. Fast Forward to last Dec. Called to schedule my Truck for oil at 500 miles, was told "no, must be close to the 10k" I argu and say "well you did my 4Runner at 500." They check records and say "no we lied to you, parts was never billed and it was not done, we only did a tire rotation". What a bunch of clowns. Kinda like when I bought the truck, I did homework on OEM power folding tow mirrors. Found a shop manager with experience and he claimed to know that the dash switch would need to be changed and a power wire would need to be run, said no problem. I go to pick up the final product and guess what, clowns put on $800 mirrors with no switch after specifically telling me they had done the procedure before and would again. They are a bunch of useless clowns, screw em all and their warranty bs. I have tools, skills, manual, internet, and I make time when I need to.

My new Tundra came with the first 5 maintenance periods free. It wasn't listed as a dealer perk, I'd assume I could do them at any Toyota Certified dealer.

We have purchased our last 3 Toyotas (2005, 2010, and 2015) at out of town dealerships due to the lower prices (after giving our local dealership an opportunity to match.) All Toyota maintenance and warranties have been honored by our local dealership.

Make sure you have the paperwork/terms in hand before going there. I learned a lesson on that one.

    > forfeit any special warranties

You don't forfeit any special warranties, you're just further away, and thus taking advantage of those is more cumbersome. I bought from a dealer ~4 hours away and it came with a non-Toyota lifetime warranty of some sort. I don't expect to use it, and TBH it's not the reason I went there in the first place. But I went to my local dealership for that free oil change. (They then forgot to reinstall all the bolts when re-attaching the skid plates, so I don't intend to use them much again.)

Nope, at least not according to the FAQ at the remote dealership where I purchased my truck.

I bought mine from a dealership that was 6 hours away because the price was so good. Toyota provides the introductory 2 year/25000 miles of maintenance, I think to try to get you used to using them. My local dealership does those (and I check behind them after every visit).

The dealership I bought from added an interior protection plan. I would have to drive back up there to use any of the benefits of that plan. I saved so much by going up there, I'm not concerned about "losing" that benefit.

Thanks for the clarification and responses.

I have been gearing up to do my own oil changes anyway. Got the Fumoto valve already and have the filter wrench in my cart now. I wanted to order the Jowett but it looks like he isn't taking orders right now.

I presume you're talking about the 2 year included maintenance plan. Why would you take it in for the oil change at 500? As you said, they want you closer to 10k when it's supposed to be done. I had 9k or so when they did mine.

There is something called manufacturing process, in this process steel and other metal parts are machined with high carbon steel cutting tooling. Chips and filings are mostly removed, but that process is done by humans who will not be buying the finished product. That leads to metal particles in the oil chambers. If I had a picture handy of my filter element I would show you some proof of what I found in there. Let's just say it wasn't pretty, but really it was because that means I got the crap out of there which was the goal. Hope you can grasp this idea. If not sorry, I don't know what else to say in order to explain my reason.

Correct. I've had 3 of 4 out of 5 free services so far at different dealerships. It's part of the Toyota care they offer with new vehicle purchases.

I can grasp it. I figured that would be your answer. I literally was only asking why though, as I like to learn new things. I make no presumptions.

Probably the crappy "free" dealer oil changes.

Learn to do it yourself and skip the 'free' service.
