I'm a first-time truck owner, so please forgive my ignorance. I recently bought a 2014 Tundra Limited Crewmax, and I was under the impression that the tailgate locked with the rest of the doors when I hit the door lock out key fob lock buttons.

Now I'm not sure that's how it works. I was naive to think that all tailgates would lock like a hatchback on an SUV; it's that not the case. How can I tell if I have an auto-locking tailgate? If I don't, is this a reasonable DIY mod or something that can be added for a relatively low cost?

There are no auto locking truck tailgates from Mama Toyota. If ya wanna lock it ya got to go all old fashioned and actually walk back there and insert the key.

I went with the OEM kit I found on Amazon. Fairly simple DIY project just takes a few hours. Well worth it. Works with key factory key fob. One of the best mods I have done. Can’t remember exactly what I spent but it was a little cheaper online compared to dealer price. Same exact kit tho.

+1. Watch a few vids and you'll gain a lot of confidence for the install. Awesome mod.

Buy the OEM part from a dealer not from Amazon; I got mine online from Springfield (OR) Toyota and paid $129 for it. Install was pretty straightforward, just take your time and read the instructions and watch a couple of videos first. If you don't feel like doing it yourself, let a dealer that you trust do it. Labor would be about $250ish. They should charge you for 3 hours of "accessory install labor" $80-90 bucks/hr and not the standard mechanical labor rate of $140-$160/hr. Good luck

I think my dealer originally quoted my somewhere around $500. Bought the OEM kit online and installed in around 2 hours. Routing and tying the harness was the hardest part.

How does the POP&LOCK setup compare to OEM? Is it as good as OEM ? It's 137.97 for 2nd gen.

Buy the OEM kit. Great instructions and can get it done on your own. No need to remove the heat shields like it says in the instructions either, just wear gloves or be very careful not to cut yourself. My tailgate and cap now lock with my fob, I love it.

Depends on which kit. The new Pop 'N Lock (PL8547TUN) is plug and play now. The old kit required moding parts and splicing into cables. For reference:
    https://vehiclesecurityinnovators.c...yota-tundra-power-lock-w-plug-play-t-harness/

Its a good kit the only pain was getting the cables run into the cabin. Once you find the right entry point its a fairly easy install.

From what I understand the Pop and Lock kit is very loud compared to OEM kit.

Get the OEM kit would be my suggestion too. Instructions were very straight forward. Took me about an hour to hour and a half working slowly.

As far as it being quiet or loud, I actually prefer to be able to hear mine lock, so that wasn't even something I worried too much about. I keep valuables in my bed when I hunt and fish, not to mention tools, so I have a Diamondback cover. The locking sound on the tailgate has a different "snick" sound than the doors. When I hear it I know, it is locked.

Just a heads up on the part #s and application on these; it seems to be a little confusing (parts guys wasn't even sure), but the instructions seemed to clear up fit a little better. My part # was PK3B6-34JS0. I have a crewmax w/5.5 bed (145" wheelbase). The parts guy and I originally thought the "S" designation in the second half of the part number was addressing short box or 5.5ft bed; vs long bed (box) However, we found that in reading through the instructions and fitment guides that "S" actually was indicating a part for
'standard' wheelbase. The wheelbase is the same for crewmax 5.5 bed, dbl cab 6.5 bed, and std cab long bed (8') @ 145"; as it only trades space in the cab for space in the bed. The only application that had a long wheelbase was dbl cab w/8' foot bed (164" wheelbase). So we found part # should be the same unless you have the 164" wheelbase. This is because the wiring harness routes under the bed, along the frame and enters the cab through a drain plug on the passenger side floorboard to plug into the existing wiring harness at the front passenger kick panel. So, application differences are simply the length of the plug in wiring harness.

I had to go aftermarket pop-n-lock for my Tundra b/c it's a 2002 but I have the OEM one for my Tacoma. I actually first bought the pop-n-lock then realized an OEM kit was available for my 2016 Tacoma and returned the pop-n-lock after ordering the OEM one.

As far as length, it's all based on the frame length so wheelbase. On the Tacoma it's short (for AC and DCSB) and long ( for DCLB) so probably same for Tundras as mentioned above.

I wouldn't sweat the part number too much though, you can easily extend or shorten the harness with heat shrink butt connectors or cut and crimp. I actually swapped my male and female sides b/c on the Tacoma there is a tree perfectly placed for the tailgate lock male connector but for some reason the spec has the female on the body side and male on the tailgate side. There is no functional difference between short and long kits, just longer wire.

From owning both, OEM is a clear winner in many small ways. Nothing wrong with pop-n-lock but price-wise they are comparable so OEM is the clear winner to me. My 2002 kit actually required minor modification to properly unlock, no big deal since it's a 20 year old truck, but shows how pop-n-lock has evolved from earlier startup mode to where it is now. Note that in 2011 pop-n-lock was acquired by vehicle security innovators and from my own personal attempts to call in, they are difficult to impossible to reach.

The OEM installation instructions (at least the Tacoma ones) are incredibly detailed.

Thanks for all the leg work. So you are saying this part number is good for the CM?

It doesn't matter, the CM and DC have the same wheelbase length.
His posted link reads it is for either..

Amazon.com: TOYOTA Genuine 2019 & Up Tundra Power Tailgate Lock Kit Standard Wheelbase PK3B6-34JS0 : Automotive

@Roman has a better price, even with shipping (at least to Texas).

Check the build link in my signature.
I had the older pop-n-lock on my 2008 and after about a year it gave up the ghost.

so far, 30k miles on my 2021 with the OEM one and no issues.
