    Hello All,

I'm thinking of moving to NC/SC. If I live in SC, i would likely get a tech job and work in Charlotte NC. My question is for those who live in SC and work in NC, what state income taxes do you pay? Only the state you work in or both?

    Thanks for responding.

I'm pretty sure you pay state taxes in the state you reside rather than work. I work all over the place, only pay NC state taxes.

Then again, i'm a foreigner and y'alls tax laws are insanely complicated for no real reason so take my input with a grain of sand.

I did this from 2010-2015 (lived in Ft. Mill and worked in Charlotte). You will file tax returns in both states you should receive a return from NC and owe nothing to SC as long as no income is generated in the state. If your spouse works in SC then it will depend on how you fill out your W4.

I work in Va and live in Nc. I pay taxes in both states. I get refund from va, which I pay nc. Working for the federal government, I was told I don't need to pay taxes in va. Who knows.

Some states have reciprocal agreements. Meaning if you work in another state ...there is a form they file with an employer ...and have their tax w/h for the state of residence. typically tax is w/h where you are earning it. So some states as stated above give you a credit. Type in google south carolina reciprocal tax agreement. See what you get.

How about w4, they will have to take taxes out. Which state? Residing state or working state?

I know during tax season you'll have to fill both States.

W4 is from the employer so if in NC that what is taken out. It should work pretty close, that whatever is returned to you from NC, you will pay to SC. When I did it I also had a little side gig that was in SC so I had earned income in both states, but the majority of mine and all of the wires was from NC.

I am a little different on my thinking. I never look to get a refund. If I get a refund from the feds or NC , I did something wrong in my withholding and the government got to earn income on my money all year. I prefer to be as close to 0 as possible and pay whatever it is I owe each April.

If you plan on using an accountant most firms working near the border can tell you exactly the correct answer you seek. If you need help I can look some up for you. I have used the same accountant for 37 years based in FL (where I used to live), but know accountants in the Rock Hill, Ft. Mill area you can call and ask.

Where in SC are you looking to live?

I will either live in York or Clover, I plan to find tech jobs in the greater Charlotte area, simply cause property/real estate property taxes is cheaper there, also so is gas. LOL

But if its easier, I am considering around Concord NC as well. We're 50/50 on the relocation.

We moved from Ft. Mill after 5 years to the Concord area (Midland) just because the traffic became a pain. Economically the SC side is the side to live on, however most the the Charlotte/Mecklenburg population figured that out and moved over the border creating a traffic nightmare in areas.

That's what I hate the most, traffic. Can't seem to get enough of that here in the Portland metro area. Grid lock everday, and worse on the weekends.

Well for now my wife and I are debating what's best for us. I just don't want to get double taxed in both states taken out- that would suck.
