I'm panning to get a new limited slip rear differential carrier assembly for my 2005 Tundra. I have located a new OEM unit at a Toyota parts reseller. The part number is 41110-34420. What I need to know is if it will need adjustment or if it is ready to install and use. The reseller so far has not provided any data. All replies appreciated. Thanks

Thanks for the note about the gasket. I have assumed that there is one supplied with the unit. I'll play safe and get one just in case. I'm hoping someone will advise me whether or not I will have rto shim the assembly.

Yes, it will need to be shimmed to set backlash.

You'll also need new carrier bearings.

Are you sure? I am pretty sure a new diff pumpkin can be bolted right up without messing with backlash but I could be wrong?

The circumstantial eveidence is building that it is shimmed. I saw a quote from a dealer to replace a pumpkin for a 2005 Tundra and it had 3 hours in the budget for everything and the only way that could work is no shimming. Also what good is a new pumpkin if you have to take it apart and put it back together again? May as well send a set of parts in a box. It would be good to find someone who has done this before. Good discussion. Anyone else have any input here?

    Have a read
    http://gearinstalls.com/Kazumatyson.htm

    Or this
    http://gearinstalls.com/kazumaeric.htm

Your results may not change as much as these since you are keeping the same ring and pinion, but there will very likely be a need to adjust the shims. You can buy a shim kit from JustDifferentials.com as well as quality bearing kits.

Check through Zuk's site, maybe he installed an LSD for somebody who kept stock gears. That will be the real answer. @assassin10000 has swapped his diff recently and he said use shims.

Ohhh. If its a whole 3rd member assembly, then it should be completed. Just need a diff gasket.

If it's the LSD carrier (center section that goes into the 3rd) then it needs bearings and possibly shims.

As expensive as this part is, as much stress as this part handles, as catastrophic to usability as a failure of this part is, I would have this installed and setup by someone knowledgeable in the procedure. I myself am not, I would have a gear shop do the install to make sure it was done properly. I know it’s not rocket science, but I don’t have the tools or the time to invest in making sure I do it right myself. I would not be afraid to research the process and tackle it myself, but I would not just drop and go.

If a gear shop does this install, do they trust it out of the box? Or do they always check for mesh and backlash?

When you buy a completed build of a new or rebuilt engine or transmission from Toyota do do they require you to take it apart and put it back together again, not! The area in the box #7 is what your buying. It's assembled and ready to be bolted in with a guarantee to work properly for a year if they haven't changed the warranty. It's an uncomplicated easy job, but your question suggest you might need help from a mechanically inclined friend while installing this. Have the few tools and torque requirements ready before starting. Ask the parts department or the service dept your question here, and the cost to do the replacement. If anyone says it's not plug and play, then stop talking and leave.

Sounds like the answer is it will be plug and play. Good luck with the install.

@frank2005sr5 I think the confusion here is from the terms used. "Carrier" is just the part the ring bolts to, the open diff or LSD variety. That complete assembly which seems to be what you're getting is commonly called a 3rd member. That is a drop in, you should be good to go.

Pretty cool to see that the full assembly is available that way. That's not priced badly either.

Zuk is on Hiatus by the way. I've been researching lockers today. I did not realize you can order a complete built 3rd member with pretty much whatever you want in there. Hmmm

Yes you can and I have new one still in the box and ready to install starting tomorrow. With limited slip for 00-06 the Toyota P/N is 41110-34420. I got it thru a Toyota parts reseller in Canada who brought it in from USA and shipped it to my shop. Good talking with you.

I just googled that up. Whew! $2100 at McGeorge. It would be a highly cool upgrade, but I think I'll be soldiering on with the tire chains for a while longer.
