I have a Kenwood TM-D710G radio. The head is on the dash, the actual radio is on the side in front of the driver seat, see pictures. I use a Comet CA-2x4SR antenna. That is an awesome antenna IMHO, with a Diamond K400C mount on the hood. You can open the hood and the Antenna nicely fits between the driver side door and the mirror. In order to keep alternator whine noise off your signal, you likely want a DC line noise filter inserted in your positive line to the radio as well. Getting the mini-UHF connector from the K400C mount through the firewall was the biggest pain of the whole install. Be happy to provide more details if you need it.

thanks for sharing, I have researched the devices of your set up and probably will go that way, I would like to mount the radio in the back under one of the seats? 73 KG5KRA

Here are a couple of pictures from my old truck. I changed it up slightly in my new truck, but don't have any pictures immediately available.
The radio is the Icom IC-2730A, I'm holding out for the next generation of aprs radios before upgrading. The body fits nicely under the driver's seat and I 3D printed a mount for the face. The mount in the picture is too shallow, so I redid it but used the same placement. I also have a speaker right behind the face, not pictured, that helps immensely with the sound, similar to what tundrapro2019 has.
There is a rubber plug in the floor under the carpet near the back of the driver's seat that is perfect for routing the coax to the rear of the truck. The antenna mount in the picture is from Breedlove. On my current truck I switched to the Comet CA-2x4SR on a custom mount on my bedrack.

If you haven't already, check out the build thread that @Lars has going.
