LEDs - Too Hot For My Housings?

    For about a month now, I've been doing a slow-motion conversion of my 2017 SR5 to 2018+ LED headlights. Initially, that led to me worrying about the visibility of the front turn signals. And, that led to me trying to figure out how to convert my Park/DRL/Signal bulb, my rear Stop/Tail/Marker bulb, and my Rear Signal bulb to LED replacements. IMO, the other functions front and rear did not warrant LEDs.

    One concern I've had is the temperatures at which the LEDs would operate...Intuitively, a bulb that delivers 2X to 5X more lumens than the stock bulbs should generate a LOT more heat, right? Ran a test in my garage today to find the answer, and discovered that it was a resounding NO!!! So, how does that jibe with Amazon reviews that show charred sockets and whining complaints about burning up harnesses? I don't know the answer to that one yet, but the exact opposite is true: Good quality LED replacement bulbs run cooler than stock incandescent bulbs!

    I installed Nakobo 921 Rear Signal LED, and JDM Astar 3157 Stop/Tail/Marker LED in the driver side of my Tundra. I left the passenger side with stock incandescent bulbs. I used a cheap infrared thermometer to measure the temps of both the LEDs and stock bulbs after the tail lights and hazard flashers had operated for approximately 30 minutes. I aimed the laser pointer of the infrared thermometer at the sockets of each bulb.

    These are the results:
    Ambient Temp: 76 deg.......Tailgate Temp: 76 deg

    Left Rear Signal (LED): 82.8 deg.......Right Rear Signal (921): 97.8 deg
    Left Tail/Marker (LED): 76.7 deg.......Right Tail/Marker (3157): 85.7 deg

    Conclusion: Good quality LEDs run 10-15 deg cooler in the socket than stock incandescent bulbs. When I measured the LED casing temps, they were the same as the base/socket. When I aimed directly at the incandescent bulbs, the glass portion was maybe another 10 deg hotter than the base/socket.

    Interesting observation: During brief signal-only tests, there was no hyperflash with only one Rear Signal LED installed on the driver side; that was as expected. But...When I got in with the left turn signal on, and started the truck, the signal went into hyperflash. :confused: Looks like resistors are definitely required with these Nakobo LEDs.
