King hydraulic bump stop adjustment

    Greetings,

    I installed hydraulic bump stops yesterday and wondering on proper height adjustment. The oem bump stops when bottomed out to the axle pad would leave 1.25” clearance over the top of my 35” tires. With hydraulic bump stops being progressive….are they intended to be set up at the height if totally bottomed out? Instructions aren’t really clear. TIAIMG_2688.jpg IMG_2692.jpg

    Yes, when the bump stop is fully compressed (plus add a quarter inch or so since the delrin striker squishes) that is true full compression of the suspension. Ideally you would remove the nitrogen from the bump stop so you could compress it, but assuming you don't have a nitrogen setup to refill it, you can just take some measurements (subtract the amount of shaft showing). You could also try and jack up the tire, but most likely you won't be able to full compress the bump stop even with the weight of the truck on it.

    And I'll also throw in here, the bump stop is "progressive" in the amount of force it puts out. But it's actually a very finite stopping point when the bump stop fully bottoms out compared to a OEM style rubber bump stop where it can always squish a bit more. In that regard a hydro is actually easier (in my opinion) to setup because you know exactly where full compression is without having to guess how much it squishes. Once the bottom striker contacts the body of the bump stop it physically won't move anymore.

    I have these same bumps, King recommends having them "all the way up for stock application". It looks like you have them installed about halfway / 2/3 of the way "down".

    The correct way to verify is to fully bump out our axle. I took out my springs and shocks, purged the nitrogen, and then fully stuffed my 37's to ensure they clear the fenders at full compression, threaded the bumps to right before the tire hits the fender, then set the bump lock rings in place. I wouldn't recommend dumping the nitrogen if you cant refill it. As snivilous said, you can probably take some measurements to get an idea of where they should be set, the instructions say "if running a tire up to a 35, you can have them set all the way up", not sure if I would trust that though...

    Just by deduction, people have stuffed their 37's on the rear stock bump stops without contacting the fender. If you take a measurement to where that stop point is (stock bumps), you can set these to the same location. You would need to factor in the shaft compressing and the delrin deflecting, but its probably one of the easier ways to do this without ripping all your suspension out. Maybe give it an extra thread for safety? It looks like your running 35's so your probably good at the stock location.

    They are really only for bottom out control. I purchased these as I usually run a lot of gear, drive a bit faster on empty fs roads, and put my two German Sheppard's in the bed when camping (their comfort when smacking the bumps). These shouldn't be contacting the axle in normal circumstances/driving.

    @timklb I have a 1” rear spacer on top of my coil. I know the instructions were saying I can set them all the way up but my tires would have contacted the rear fenders before totally bottomed out on the bump stops. Or they would have been closer than the stock bump stops for clearance. I have a bit of poke on the tires so they’re not tucked completely under. I’ve set them at the same height as the stock bump stops if they’re fully bottomed out. This gives me 1.25” tire clearance at the fender when bottomed out. Hopefully not an issue with that clearance ?
