What’s up bros, I have a 05 Tundra. I lost the keys to it and had to buy a new lock cylinder with keys. I can get the new lock cylinder in and it’ll turn the car on and everything but when I want to take the key out it won’t come out. It just won’t turn all the way to lock and come out. When i have the lock cylinder in my hand it’ll turn all the way to lock and come out but as soon as i put it in it won’t turn all the way to lock and it’ll stay stuck there. I need help and I need it fast. I’m new to the car fixing scene and want as much help and advice as you guys can give me. Here are some pictures so you can see what’s going onIMG_9179.jpg IMG_9178.jpg IMG_9179.jpg IMG_9179.jpg IMG_9179.jpgIMG_9180.jpg IMG_9179.jpg IMG_9178.jpg

Do you still have the original cylinder? You know you can simply walk into a dealership with proof of ownership and the VIN# and they'll cut you a new key for less than $20, right? They can quickly and easily look up your truck's key, there weren't that many variations, and several people on the forum have done exactly that.

Is that an aftermarket lock cylinder? If so, that's probably your problem. Especially if it's a cheap piece of shit from fleaBay or scAmazon, which sell garbage parts.

hey yeah I wish I knew that before everything so since we did lose the key and couldn’t get the original lock cylinder out we kind of grinded it to be able to take it out. But yes we bought the new one off of Amazon. We actually bought 3 and they’ve all had the same issue. They go in and turn the car on and everything but whenever we want to take the key off it won’t come out. I wish I’d knew that you could just get a new key before we made the situation even worse. This is how it looks like currently. Any tips on what might be causing that issue or anyone know where we can buy a brand new lock cylinder that isn’t Amazon or eBay. Or if there is any certain brand that I should buy on Amazon I’d like to know as well. Thanks in advance.

There's something that should engage/disengage when put in park. That allows and prevents turning to off depending on shifter position.

If you damaged this or ground it away, this could be your problem.

What assassin1000 said. I think some vehicles have a solenoid that engages/disengages something that blocks the key from turning all the way off if the vehicle isn't in park. This video has an example. Go to the 2 minute 15 mark. Even looks like a Toyota. Maybe something is unplugged?

The key has to be pushed in to rotate to the off position. Perhaps that mechanism is damaged?

Do you still have the old lock cylinder, or did you destroy it pulling it out?

Also, what's going on here? Why is that part being held on by a zip-tie?

Also notice T-taps and what appears potentially like aftermarket alarm fuckery in the background. I can’t think of anything with an aftermarket alarm that would impact the shift/key lockout, but …

Update I kind of gave up but came to my senses that I can’t leave the truck sitting like that. I have a question, as you can see in the pictures the cylinder lock housing was grinded down. Could that be one of the reasons it’s not working? I need help. Should I buy a whole new housing with the cylinder lock included. Would that fix the situation. Is it easy to swap the housing? Also I saw that there’s a housing for the 2 door, and 4 door. Which one should I buy? My truck is an access cab so I don’t know if it would fall under the 2 door or 4 door. Thanks in advance.

You can replace the housing. However, it's secured with tamper proof bolts whose head breaks off when installed. So you will need to drill the center of the two bolts, then use an extractor to remove them.

ETA - That's for the double cab. Not sure about the RC/AC.

You still haven’t answered the questions from posts 7 & 8.

Yo answer question 7, yes it was destroyed when pulling it out. And to answer question 8, i have know idea what’s going on there or why it’s being held by a zip tie. I’m guessing the previous owner had something to do with it because he did loads of horrible “mods” to the truck.

Did you watch the video that @Fragman posted above? It's fantastic. I bookmarked it to use as a resource in the future.

Look at 3:10 in the video. Your zip-tied part looks like it's probably the key lockout solenoid. Maybe it's not lined up properly? Maybe you damaged something hacking the old one out. Maybe there's a piece of debris from hacking? In any event, that area would seem to be what's causing your problem.
