What's up fellas. Anyone here have experience programming keys for the 2011 tundra? I want to buy a blank chipped key, have it cut a Home Depot, and then program it myself instead of paying the $70 at the dealer for a spare.

Also, I have a key fob for my old 2005 Tacoma (RIP) it's the same exact fob, can i program this to my tundra? Thanks guy!

My '13 has the separate fob for the door locks, and the first three characters on the FCC ID are GQ4. This is the code for TRW, who makes this particular transmitter. TRW is assigned frequency 315.000 Mhz for their fobs. Also there is a "G" on the key blade, denoting the particular transponder for the immobilizer. So what I've done, in a quest to have a combo key/fob is to buy a "G" key blank with a door lock transmitter starting with GQ4xxxxxxx. The GQ4-29T with a "G" chip fit the bill (I think it's for the 2010-2013 Corolla, Venza and Avalon). This is a four button transmitter, so I also bought a key shell that covers the fourth button that is used for the trunk/rear hatch (I found out that all the transmitters have four buttons, with the fourth button covered when application is for a pickup). Total outlay, $24 for the GQ4-29T, $4 for the shell. Now .... will it work? Don't know yet, since I'm out of town. Wife says the key arrived in the mail yesterday, so when I get home tomorrow, I plan to register the key immobilizer chip to the truck, them program the transmitter for the doors. Both require the TechStream for my '13 (and for all 2nd and 3rd generations, I think). Assuming it all works, I'll be going into town to let Wally World cut the key for me.

To do this with your 2011, you'll need to check the FCC ID on the back, and also check the key shank for either a "G" or a dot, or nothing there. These are the only three possibilities, I think. I believe the lack of any marks is for no immobilizer, but the dot and the "G" are different transponder frequencies, so you have to get the right one. Also have to pick a key whose transmitter frequency is correct. Each manufacturer is assigned a particular frequency by the FCC. The first three characters of the FCC ID is the company identifier.

Well Matt, hope you enjoyed your popcorn.....unfortunately, it didn't work. I don't know why. I had expected that the same frequency from the same manufacturer would succeed. But I'm going to keep foolin' with things, trying to figure out something that will work. The immobilizer chip registered just fine, but I couldn't get the truck to respond to the wireless transmitter at all.:(

That procedure does not work with the 2nd Gen tundras. You have to use techstream to do the programming. I tried that a few weeks ago. It will not put the truck into programming mode.

I stand corrected......I just looked it all up again, and from what I can glean from a number of sellers of replacement keys/fobs, the progamming must be done by techstream for all Tundras/Sequoias 2010 and newer. Prior to 2010, it was a DIY operation, I assume by the method shown in the video.

Bought the flip key mentioned above. It's supposed to be here within a week or so. Comes out of Sugarland, TX so shouldn't take long. Will report back when all is done.

The key came today. Looks just like the key for my wife's VW bug, same quality, same case, same heft as the VW key, just has a Toyota logo instead of VW. Registered the immobilizer, programmed the remote lock/unlock buttons. All worked without a hitch...took about five minutes with techstream. All I have left to do is to get the key cut. I recommend it, although, at least for now, the key is off the market... no longer listing on ebay.

As it turned out, getting the key cut was the hardest part. I live outside a very small town in a lightly populated county. Neither the Walmart guy nor the Home Depot in the next county was able to cut the key. There is only one locksmith in the county, so I took it to him. He said, "sure, I can cut it." So he put it on his little cutting machine, and the first side went fine, but when he tried to cut the other side of the key, the plastic body part of the key was hitting the cutting machine structure. He tried every angle and grinder that he had in the shop and could not cut the last 1/4" of the key. He finally gave up, wouldn't take any payment for his effort, and gave me the name and phone number of another locksmith, about 50 miles away.

I pondered this for about a week, and tried to get up my nerve to finish the job myself with a file. Finally decided, hell, it's just one more notch, and just has to match the one opposite it, so I clamped it in my vise and took the file to it, and in about 3 minutes had a working flip key.

    Hi Mike,

What version of the software did you use? I'm trying to 'program' a replacement wireless key fob/remote for my 2010 Tundra. I have V12.30.17 and the option for 'programming' the remote is not there, just the KEY.

    Hi Mike,

Apparently, I'm missing something. When I go to the Immobilizer tab and 'click' on the Utility button, I get this:
    Techstream.jpg
If I select 'Customize', then go to the next page I get this:
    Techstream_2.jpg

Where do I need to go to enter/train/whatever the truck for a new Wireless key FOB??

    I GREATLY appreciate your help!

I was able to get the Wireless remote paired with the truck. Was just looking in the wrong section to the software to do so.

Hey guys, I am new to the Tundra and to this forum, and am looking to program two new key FOBs for my 2008 Tundra. What is Techstream, and is it needed to complete the process of adding new FOBs to an 08?

I bought the Mini-VCI J2534 obd2 cable and cd with techstream. I bought the flipkey fir my 2011 Tundra with remote and G ID. (Looks like the VW flip key https://www.ebay.com/ulk/itm/361652068733). Installed the techstream software following instructions and it wants me to update the software and create an account at TIS. Anyone run into this?
I never did get to the step where I can program the key.

Follow-up. I decided to finish it. I had two of the above flip key combos cut by a locksmith to match my key. The fob half of the flipkey detaches from the key half to make it easier to cut. I was warned it might not work. I said do it anyway. It worked.
Then I took both to the local Toyota dealer to program. They said it might not work and we have to charge you anyway. I said, do it, its fine. It worked.

    Costs
    2 flip keys: $35.27 each
    2 Locksmith: $4 each
    2 Toyota programming: $60 each

Plus the cost of the Mini-VCI cable and obsolete Techstream software, which does not work without an upgrade.

I might not have done this if I hadn't read that other Tundra members had been successful. Thanks for sharing!
