Hi all - First time poster here! I have read through a bunch of threads to try and educate myself.

I've had my 2014 Tundra (1794) for about 9 years and finally getting around to doing some upgrades.

I have always been frustrated with the head unit (restarts) and the bass capability is horrible and ruins the whole listening experience. I am a home theater enthusiast, so I have some experience with hi-fi audio.

I just upgraded, tires, rims, suspension etc, so I don't have a ton of extra $$ for this project.

I'm looking for suggestions on what I can do to this JBL system to get the most out of it. I was thinking of replacing the head unit and replacing the subwoofer (I think it may be blown).

I'd like the head unit to be reasonably capable and able to power at least some speakers. I'd like a large screen, Apple car play, delivers great sound, maintains the functionality of vehicle and integrates well with the existing setup. There are so many options I'm in analysis-paralysis!

Does replacing the subwoofer make sense? Is the existing amp up to the task to power a replacement or do I need to swap out the amp as well?

Any suggestions for me would be really appreciated!

    Thanks!

    Trevor

A free possible quick fix for the headunit restarts, have you tried a software update?
Go through toyota website to find updates, download file to a usb stick or flash card, install in truck. Site had good instructions.

My 2015 Sequoia with JBL that kept reloading was fixed by a simple update at least.

Thanks Totmacher, I really want Apple car play so I'll likely do the head unit upgrade, but will certainly do the software update in the short-term!

I've read threads here people saying new sub in a new box sounds ok, better than stock jbl but not loud due to weak factory amp. A new amp allegedly makes a big difference but if you have blown speakers and low budget, I'd simply try new speakers first.
Is the jbl sub 2ohm and main speakers 4ohm I think so just match that. There is a thread here somewhere that someone posted factory ohm rating.

Providing a dollar amount is helpful. “Don’t have a ton of extra $$” could be $500 for some. While it is another’s $1500, and $10k for someone else.

One option you can explore is a complete plug and play unit from Dasaita.
    Costs around $600

You can order directly from Dasaita or use Amazon

This is a full android head unit that has both carplay and Andoid Auto.

You can use this link to check one out specifically for your Tundra

This is the same unit in my 2016 SR5

Thanks!! I've been looking at this unit. Saw some mixed reviews? Can the Dasaita play video while driving? Also looking at the T'eyes CC3

Worth checking out TrailGridPro too. They have a bunch of plug-and-play options for both headunits and audio upgrades. Lot of folks here have installed the Alpine / Sony units. I'm debating it myself and looking at the Sony XAV-9000ES. Lots of posts if you search the forum.

I guess it depends - i use youtube music and some of the songs are actual concert footage and the video plays.

I dont have a T-mobile sim card for internet connection so i cant verify Netflix or any other video platform.
Im sure someone else can provide some more feedback as to video playing.

I also looked at the Teyes CC3. Dont you have to purchase the harness separately for that unit?

I also looked at MekedeTech and DUDU Auto from Aliexpress and i think Amazon now carries them.
Last year the DUDUAuto unit was new and not available yet, but it looks to be a real nice unit.

I suppose a key question I have is how serviceable are the JBL speakers? Obviously there are far better sounding speakers out there but are they any kind of an upgrade over the non-JBL systems?

Right now I'm thinking of buying a new head unit and then changing the sub amp and add a box behind the seat with two 10" bass drivers. Hoping that will be a reasonable upgrade for the moment and something I can build on over time.
