My son and I are in disagreement on whether or not it is okay to jack my Tundra from the rear differential housing. With jack stands handy and wheels chocked, I say it is okay to jack at the differential if using a good 3-ton floor jack, with plans to place stands on either side of the axle. My son says no, and that I should either jack at either side of the diff on the axle, or at the pinch points located fore and aft of the tires.

What is the correct placement point when jacking the rear end?

floor jack is at the diff, because it will not slip off if the floor jack wheel don't move.
the cup on the floor jack will slip off the axle, and it will damage the sheet metal if jack on pinch point.
If you have a sway bar then you have to jack on the diff or the frame

What I want to know is since when is the father ever wrong? Even if the son is right he is still the son there fore everything you say is void because I'm your father and what I say goes.. needless to say I have never won an argument with my father..

My 85 year old mechanic buddy has been lifting vehicles with a floor jack beneath the "Pumpkin" all his life ~ I learned this trick from him, actually.

I know we're talking apples and oranges here ~ see if you can stay with me on this one.

I had an antique 1965 Ford Falcon ~ I always jacked the rear end up the same way ~ floor jack under the pumpkin.
Then the axle housing developed a leak ~ the gear oil was getting out of a hairline crack and making a mess.
I took the whole third member out of the housing, blocked off the opening with a piece of sheet metal and welded up the crack in the housing to stop the leak.
Reinstalled the third member, axles and put the vehicle back on the road without issue. Worked like a champ ~ no more leak.

That was the very last time I'll ever jack up the back end of a rear wheel drive vehicle in this manner.
I'm not about to go through this with another vehicle of mine ~ Ever !

    Your Mileage May Vary . . . :)
