I've been trying to figure out mounting points for a winch mount.
I haven't taken the bumper off yet to get a better look but I can get a good idea of what's there.
I've looked at the 36" wide universal mounts to possibly use. Cut the reinforcement and weld that into it
Would like to keep the stock bumper if possible.
Pics of how any winch bumper is mounted is greatly appreciated.

Also interested in seeing examples of this idea. I'd like to add a winch, but less interested in replacing the stock bumper.

I've done a lot of fabricating so I'm going to look at reinforcing the frame horns. They look like they would crumple on impact but not sure if reinforcing them for pulling with a winch is a good idea. Maybe just add gussets from the horns to the bumper reinforcement.
I need to remeasure the frame width up front but I think the universal 36" wide winch mount just might work.

I don't think I've seen many, if any, mount a winch to the stock bumper. On my 02, there isn't a ton of space between the bumper and the radiator.

If you feel like searching, I remember seeing a guy doing a hidden winch behind his stock bumper on a white Sequoia over on ExpeditionPortal. I think it was titled "Stealth Winch" or something along those lines.

Keep in mind that's an earlier tundra. I know the 06 has a rectangular tube bumper beneath the plastic, I dont think the older models have that under their steel bumpers.

Hi, Jim, welcome to the forum. I have a 2002 (a lot changed by 2006). “We” custom built a prerunner style tube bumper that will accommodate a winch in future. I agree with the observation that there’s very little clearance with the stock bumper. Although SDHQ sells a hidden winch that installs behind the stock bumper of 3rd gens, I can’t see how to realistically fit one behind a stock 1st gen. This may/ may not help, but here’s a pic of what we found when we removed the front bumper of mine.
