We pull a small travel trailer to go family camping, and also sometimes we take 2 sea kayaks on top of our '03 Toyota 4Runner with a roof rack. Other times, we just haul a bunch of greens to the greens dump so would need to be able to use the bed of the truck for that. Now We are planning to buy a used Tundra with 5.5 or 6.5 bed. I want to learn about bed covers. Are the tonneau covers waterproof? Is it better to buy a folding cover? What about the fiberglass covers with hydraulic lifts? If we purchase a kayak rack, can we still use some type of cover over the bed?
    Please help!

Thanks, Trooper 2. Your answer is most helpful, though not what I wanted to hear. If one gets the hard tonneau, are they the fiberglass ones? How high do those cover lift up? And thanks for sending the photo of your loaded up truck. How many miles do you have on her?

The painted to match tonneau is fiberglass and the Undercover brand (for one) is molded plastic that comes in black. They lift up a few feet above the tailgate kind of like a trunk lid on a car.
The pic is actually in my signature, she has 138kish miles but drives like maybe 50k or a much newer truck.

Idea for your kayak, search for hitch receiver rack and maybe something on the roof for the other end.

    Something like this.
