I have a 2021 Tundra SR5 4WD truck. I like the feature that "beeps" when the truck is approaching (or being approached) too closely. It has already "saved" me from accidentally backing into a trailer hitch!

It seems to work great when something approached from the front side or the rear. Beeps like a chicken when I'm in tall grass or pulling a trailer. I have to turn it off or it would drive me crazy. The problem is that when I pull straight into my garage, I can drive up to within a foot of my garage wall and the dang thing doesn't beep?

Is this normal? Does the system just expect you not to drive into walls? (LOL) It's not a big deal, but I would think that a warning system like this would work directly in front of the vehicle.

They work best at detecting objects off center better than straight ahead.

Sounds like they are working correctly

this ^ The sensors are not pointed forward, they point out to the sides a bit. Guess that is to help with turning clearances. Your truck is working as designed.

I appreciate these responses. I went outside and tested my wife's 2020 Highlander. Her beepers work dead ahead. I guess it's just a bit different in the truck.

Correct, go through a drive-thru close to the wall and the truck hits defcon-9, nose up to a vehicle and nothing. Great for side impact, useless for direct impact??

I have a similar problem. I can barely get behind my truck with the door closed unless I'm very close to the front wall. I've got a shelf on that wall, and I hung a piece of cord about 3" from the wall on that shelf, and I pull forward slowly until I see if move. Sometimes the lo-tech kludge is all you can do ;)
