is there a way to display what gear the transmission is in out of the 10?

In my ram, I would always manually upshift to the highest gear 8, this opened a numeric field on on the screen showing which gear it would currently be in and kept it activated there.

This is extremely useful for me, it helped me build a understanding how and where the engine/transmission gears change for load/inclines and cruising mph.

I see the tundras have a shifter with +/-, so I imagine there has to be some kind of display to show the driver which gear its in, or so 1 would think.

Anybody have any pics or is there no such a thing? Also never seen sport shift +/- on a truck before, that is interesting as well.

I have only used that mode when towing so limited experience. But...Not on my SR5 with the 4.5 inch display- the displayed number shows only the top gear that will be available for use. It will not change while driving. Nor have I ever seen a 10 when I downshift manually when going into Sport mode at highway speeds. My experience and the OM sorta says it too, the Sport mode usually sets the maximum gear that will be automatically shifted up to and conversely can also set the lowest gear(s) to be used from a dead stop or while in motion depending on your speed. Of course you can downshift using Sport mode to use the engine for deceleration. Downshifting will show the number change you are manually making. Sport mode is a misnomer IMHO.
Confused? Now read the OM on the Toyota website....lol.

Im also curious about the same thing. In ECO mode my truck doesn’t downshift to lowest gears unless I come to complete stop. When I push shift lever over, the lowest gear that shows is 4th gear. I wish Toyota would change the gear mapping so it would drop down to lower gears sooner. Seems odd to accelerate from under 10 mph in 4th gear. Rpms go up but torque converter is doing all the work. I wish there was a way to see what gear I am in while driving. Anyone else know if there is a way to change gear display from D to the gear you are in?

I just saw a report of some guy that can see the gearing, he kept complaining the dash never read 10 and truck always cruised in 9th gear (as displayed) and he's like only seen it read 10 like twice since owning the truck, or maybe I misread that article for something else

I mean, its a .61:1 10th gear with a 3.31 axle ratio. The thing isnt even turning 1500 rpm at 70 mph with that much gear. I could see it not needing 10th much unless you are absolutely flying.

9th gear is .66:1 so still pretty tall.

By comparison, the 6th gear in my 2014 F150 is .691:1 and I have a 3.73 axle. My driving around in 6th gear is like a Tundra in 8th.

At the same time though, it makes you wonder why they chose such a tall axle ratio if its not using all the gears.

Unrelated sort of, but my daughters Jeep Cherokee with the 9 speed auto never goes into 9th gear. It’s programmed to shift to ninth over 85mph only. Must be for the European market or something…..

I’m not sure if it’s different in the non-digital cluster but when I pop mine into sport via the shifter my digital display shows the gear where it would normally show “D”. On the highway it always goes right to 8 and I can toggle up or down. Yes it is hard to get it into 10th unless you’re really moving. I’m surprised the non digital display doesn’t show the same thing.

Ha, I’m a non hybrid peasant too. The digital dash was ONE of the reasons I went with the Platinum over a Limited

10th gear is for the guvmunt. Frankly, so is 9th. And prolly 8th.

On my 2017 6th gear is for the guvmunt.

10th would be fine if they put a decent gear ratio in the axle like everyone else. Ram has 3.92's, Ford has 3.73's and Chevy has 3.73's and all of them have similar transmission ratios as the Tundra.

I’m just happy that even when I’m doing 90+ I’m still hovering around 2000 rpm’s

Oh didn't think you could get dash unless it was hybrid, interesting, will keep a lookout to swap in the dash then from the upper value trims, reprogram your mileage in and hopefully plug and play, it was this way for the 4th gen ram

A lot of wrong info in this thread.

The S on the shifter is not “Sport”. Toyota calls it S mode for “sequential”.

The select top gear is S mode is shown on both the digital display and the standard instrument cluster.

Whatever gear you select will remain until you change it. However, the transmission still shifts through all the gears normally up to the selected top gear. So if you choose S4, it will shift 1-2-3-4-3-2-1 normally just like if you were in D but won’t go into 5th.

There’s no way to display the current gear. You have to count or memorize what RPM at what speed is what gear.

The diff ratio thing is interesting but need to consider 1st gear ratio too
F150 (I almost always see either the 3.31 or 3.55, never see 3.73 on a sales lot)
    • 1st: 4.696 x 3.55 = 16.67
    • 10th: 0.636 x 3.55 = 2.258
    RAM
    • 1st: 4.71 x 3.92 = 18.46
    • 8th: 0.67 x 3.92 = 2.626
    Tundra
    • 1st: 4.92 x 3.31 = 16.28
    • 10th: 0.61 x 3.31 = 2.019
Tundra’s total ratio is not that far off from the F150’s but RAM is way ahead. 3.92 is hard to beat.

so what information was wrong? They competition have shorter overall ratios in their top gears due to both transmission and axle ratios. Fords is >10% shorter. That might not sound like much but its 150-200 rpm

If you are looking at the 3.5 Ecoboost then 3.73 is more rare. It comes on the Tremor and HDPayload package. max tow trucks are 3.55.

Powerboost F150’s come standard with 3.73’s.

2.7 and 5.0 are able to option 3.73’s without any special packages

No, what you mentioned was interesting but not wrong. Definitely, the total gearing is important though.
Also I forgot to mention, I could notice my Tundra uses 10th at like 80 mph. The couple of F150s I’ve driven typically go into 10th around 55 mph as reference.

Any tuners doing transmission reflashes yet?

My last truck had a engine and tranny tune, doing so improved mpg like 25%.

Imagine these gen3 going into 10th at 55 instead of 80. Mpg would have some improvements one would think
