I’m currently working on a deal for a 2019 Platinum with just over 10k miles on it. It’s listed for 42k and I’m trying to get them down to 38-39k, waiting to hear back.

Anyway, is it worth going for a Platinum if I’m primarily a pavement driver and may off road 5 times a year and that would be to get to a fishing spot or two. Or should I focus on Limited, save more money and build it the way I’d like?

I lIke the creature comforts in the Platinum but not sure I would miss them if I don’t get them since I don’t have them today.

    Thoughts?

Platinum is nice, if you can get it for a price that you like I would go for it. All depends on what is important to you, some guys like to add their own stuff on, some guys like factory installed. Get the one that speaks to you :). All said and done its still a Tundra

The driver seat seems more comfortable in the platinum then the limited. I just purchased a 2017 platinum with 20k miles on it out the door for 40k back in November 19.

I think having the creature comforts from the factory (since they are limited anyway with Tundras). Only big things I'm tracking would be the seats, heated/cooled, leather, things of that nature. Especially if you're driving mostly on pavement anyway, just get it ready to crush that pavement in the most comfortable fashion...just my $0.02.

I ended up with a 2017 Limited that I own and a 2019 SR5 ORP for work. I drove the Platinum back to back with the Limited and liked it a lot. I really wanted the ORP tho and preferred the ORP rims and tires for looks and performance in my snowy climate. So I ordered my Limited with all options (sunroof; JBL; BSM; parking sensors; rear cross traffic alert; etc). IIRC, in 2017, I missed out on cooled seat function (I have heated only) and the nicer leather interior. And as I said.. the 20” wheels which I didn’t want. The headlights in 2017 weren’t LED yet in the Platinum... so I didn’t miss out on those. I ended up just putting the 2019+ LED headlights and fog lights in my 2017 the other day. The hadn’t decontented the Limited yet in 2017: so mine still has the auto up/down function for the driver and passenger side and some other goodies I think were discontinued in 2018 and 2019. Anyway, look closely at the options and the look at both trucks. See what you want and the best way to get it. TBH, today, with the way Toyota has pushed things up the ladder in all trim levels and decontented the trims going up... I’d likely buy a Platinum especially if I was going to use the cooled seats and other upgrades ona regular basis. Either way, you’ll end up with a great truck.

Rather have it and not need it, than want it and not get it.

Definitely more comfortable leather, that alone is enough to go for it.

    I have a 17' Platinum, zero regrets...

I was in between the platinum and trd pro when I bought in 2017.. I bought the pro because of the overall ride but most everything I have added is to get to a Platinum. If I did it over I would have haggled on Platinum because there at least in 2017 was easier to find. I and upgraded to be as good or better than a pro. I will say my other issue was the diamond dash was another thing I didn't like. I looked at several used ones and it didn't seem to wear well.

The diamond stitching really took me by surprise when I test drove one, I didnt' like it. Cooled seats would be awesome though, I live in a hot area

I'm not sure how the new Tundras are with the cooled seats but in 2017 the Platinum that was my biggest disappointment. I had rented the Chevy Suburban, Ford Expedition and my in-laws have an f250 with air-condition seats and the Toyota was not even close to the same. The suburban will give you frostbit and the Tundra is a luke cold at best.

Platinum...If you like the features of the Platinum, which I do (but bought a new '14 Limited in 2014 instead-argh!), haggle on the Platinum. For example, the power folding mirrors are something I would like, color-matched grill and the seat material is more comfy than the Limited. Oh, BTW as others have said, the Toyota cooled seat option sucks, GM's kicks butt.

When I look at adding these features after-the-fact, although its a fun project, they cost substantially more than if I had just bought the '14 Platinum back then. I think it was a $5K swinger back in 2014.

Although I don't know what the COVID impact will be to the Tundra launch schedule, there has been talk of a new Tundra platform (not "redesign") coming in 21 or 22. My guess is that there is a good chance this will be delayed as I believe we will also see cascading impacts across many industries. So as we WERE getting closer to seeing a new Tundra platform, this may be further off than a year or two now and most guys cant wait 2+ years to see what Toyota does with the Tundra.

Overall, in the near term (30-60 days) BE PATIENT and HAGGLE. Given the current economic situation, the ball in is your court...the auto industry is getting ready to take HUGE haircut as used car pricing is about to plummet due to diminished demand. This will pull down the new car prices with it.

i was looking at a platinum and a limited. i went with the limited because it was 5k cheaper and it has everything that the platinum had minus a couple things that really wasn't worth 5k to me

Get the platinum, more room to negotiate. Plus the comforts are what you will use 95% of daily driving. It’s real nice to remote start your truck and have the cabin and seat exactly how you like it on a summer day or chilly morning.

I would say go with a PRO...main reason why i went for the platinum was for the ventilated seats. Which are a total disappointment and barely noticeable. My lexus had ventilated seats and i could feel them on my back and legs...the Tundra just feels like they're on the thigh portion.

Having the auto up/down on the passenger side window alone makes a platinum worth it. And, to date, this isn’t something you can add in after the fact and have it operate like factory. Pretty stupid but I’m glad I have it

I would shop around. You are getting pretty close to new prices. I paid $48,000 (msrp $54,4xx) for a new 2020 platinum (7 miles on the odo) last january. It came with Toyota sprayed in bed liner and sunroof. And that was before the economy shut down. I bet there are some great deals out there and/ or killer financing.

Biggest difference between 2019 and 2020 is Apple CarPlay / android auto in the “20 and smart key / push button start. Both outstanding features.

I can’t stand chrome, so no chance of me getting a limited, especially with the lower grade leather interior. I get quite a few compliments on the diamond quilting leather interior (which is surprising) in my Platinum. Sitting in a limited back to back with a Platinum really shows how much nicer the Platinum interior is.

What sort of financing are you getting? I got a black 18 Platinum (20k miles, running boards, Berliner, try fold hard cover, etc) last June for just under $40K. I have excellent credit, and went through my credit union, but still not 0% like a lot of places are offering now.

Truth be told, I am wishing I would have spent the extra $10k to get a 2020 Platinum in my preferred color (MGM) with 0% financing, proximity entry, push button start, factory remote start, CarPlay, etc.

I wish I would have bought a Platinum. I've spent a bunch of money to upgrade my SR5 to a near Platinum level. I looked at a Limited when I bought my truck, but unfortunately didn't even think to look at the Platinum.

The Platinum was the closest truck out of the box that would meet my needs. Put on a roll up tonneau cover, running boards and Weathertech liners. Besides tires, I probably won't do much to this truck. But I'm sure that has been said many times in this forum.

Thanks for the reply, would you go for the 2020 or save a few thousand and go with 2019 with low miles? I am having a hard time justifying a bigger screen and Apple CarPlay for 5-7k more.

Yeah that's a tough one. I like the keyless entry but I don't even bother with Apple CarPlay. 5 grand is a nice lift with wheels and tires. There was a 19 PRO in another town but I really liked the Platinum's interior. A couple of months later, I still love the Platinum.

Just a couple more points. In my 2018 Platinum I still cannot believe what a piece of flaming garbage the "premium" JBL stereo system in, in particular the head unit. MANY threads on it. If they have fixed that with the updated 2020, that is a big bonus if you care about audio quality and performance. The updated head unit on my Pro 4Runner sounds light years better.

My 2020 4Runner Pro has keyless / proximity entry, factory remote start, and push button start. Is so nice to not have to deal with keys, and makes the process of using keys when I drive my truck feel "roll up window" level archaic. It is a function that you use every time you use the vehicle.

I don't know about how it compares to the LTD, but I do own both an SR5 dbl cab with an 8ft bed and a Crew max Platinum, I agree the seats are more comfortable in the platinum for sure, I think most of the reason is the platinum seems to have more padding in the seats.
The Sr5 seats always seem a bit too firm.

I second that about the keyless start feature on the 2020s. I had a 17 Platinum Tundra and now have a 2020 Platinum Tundra. That push button start is probably one of my favorite improvements on my 2020. There are several others when comparing it to my old 2017, but compared to a 2018 or 2019, that push button start is the main difference on platinum trim models.

I think it is much easier to add the fox shocks to a truck then it is to try and add many of the other features some of which would just be near impossible to upgrade like the push button start.

you could swap the head unit for a few hundred bucks and have Apple car play. The keyless entry and start was actually a negative for me. I had it in my raptor and always preferred an actual key. Since Toyota barely changes anything in the trucks over the years, I’d snag the 19.
