Is it normal to have starting problems after reconnecting the battery?

The past couple of weekends I needed to borrow the battery from my Tundra to start another car. Each time after putting it back and then trying to start it, it fires then dies right away. I even tried pressing the pedal slightly but the same thing happens. It starts on the second try and runs fine after that. I've never had something like this happen to anything else I've owned or own.

    Stock....for now.
Yes, if I remember correctly it is the vehicle doing quick diagnostics, establishing min max parameters. Like a test run so to speak. My previous Tacoma did it when I unplugged the battery and we just put a new battery in my dad's tundra and it also did it.

I would say it's normal. I'm on my 2nd battery swap. First turn over dies.

Yes, mine does this also. I remember seeing it in a video but it was still concerning the first time it happened.

If you are still needing to use your Tundras battery to start another car, invest in one of these. Its a hell of alot easier than battery out, battery in.

Nice gizmo but what I really need is another battery for the other car. It's a car I rarely drive and was doing some work on it. I'll buy the battery once I get it running right.

Gotcha. Another option after you replace the battery and if its parked outside is a solar maintainer. I have one on my TT battery. I disconnect the negative cable (the radio is always powered) and have the solar connected...it works really well.

The car is always garaged. I plan on some sort of battery tender after I get that battery. It's a bit of an oddball size and not cheap.

If you turn the key to "on" and wait like 30 seconds before cranking, the truck shouldn't stall. I believe it's something to do with the throttle body calibrating as others have alluded to.

+1....... I keep one on my Tundra if its going to sit for a week or so. Both my Tundra and Tacoma start then die after reconnecting the battery, normal.

Yup. Totally normal. It freaked me out too when it first happened to me. Now, I use one of these whenever I disconnect the battery. It saves all the ecu settings, the custom tune, the head unit settings, and it prevents the truck from dying on the first startup after reconnecting the battery:

I had the battery out again yesterday to use in my other car. This time I waited about 30 seconds with the key in the on position before restarting. It started fairly normally without dying as it it did before.

If it only did once and was after the battery replacement and is completely fine now I wouldn't worry about it. Probably after having the battery out both positive and negative grounded and drained any left over electricity out of the capacitors in the electronics.

or if it sat for a long period of time with out battery.
when I swapped my battery I didn't have a issue , but I wouldn't chalk it up to uncommon givin several variables in effect.

Actually the battery wasn't out for too long, maybe just for a couple of hours. I'm not sure if the cable ends touched anything while they weren't connected to anything. Either way I don't worry about it anymore when I borrow the battery. It just happens the battery in the Tundra is the easiest one to remove for borrowing.

Cleaning the throttle makes them start up much better and run smoother after battery replacement.

How long does it take the "miles to empty" estimator to get accurate again? It was way off on the first fill up (40% too high). It's been a month and it's still about 15% too high.

I've never paid attention to it. I just watch the gas gauge. If it gets down to around a 1/4 then I fill up. That's never let me down.
I just set on outside temperature. It's too depressing to see the mpgs.

All 3 Toyota’s I’ve owned have behaved this way when disconnecting/reconnecting the battery.

This is the 1st Toyota and only vehicle I've had that would do it. It's also the only drive by wire I've owned. Turning the key to just on for a few seconds before starting seems to solve the issue.
