I have an 07 4.8L tundra that has an after market camper shell that I'm installing an after market touch screen stereo with back up camera. All videos I've seen for installation of the camera has been through the tailgate handle, which I do not have. I was thinking of piloting a hole around the license plate mount, but I wanted to see if anyone on here has had any experience with this or have any other ideas. Thank you.

I have one like this on mine

It works pretty well but not sure it is as good an image as the tailgate factory one was?

But there are options and they dont have to involve running wire to the moving tailgate or swinging door.

When I had mine installed, they just drilled a small hole in the bumper next to the license plate. It works ok, but I think it would be better if it was higher up. I don;t get a real wide view and have to still be very careful backing up.

I just got one that attaches to the license plate frame a few weeks ago. The angle is adjustable, which is nice so I can point it down to see the edge of the bumper and anything or anyone that might have snuck behind me.

When my tailgate is down (lumber), I can still see very well- which is why I didn’t want to get the tailgate handle camera.

The downside of the camera being so low is rainwater collects on the camera lens and makes it a blurry picture of it’s wet. If you’re mounting low, I recommend thinking about how the water would either collect or run off. I haven’t tried any coatings on the lens because I like the 1080p picture when it’s dry and fear anything would cloud it.

I would suggest putting it up as high as possible. It gives you the widest field of view, and looking down on the bumper makes it easier to tell how close to things you are. The perspective from down low isnt ideal. It eliminates the blindspot, but you cannt get an easy feel for where things are compared to your corners.
