If like me you are wanting to get this mod done but were discouraged by the lack of info,
here are a few things that may help you out.

First, the official thread with instructions can be found here: I have tried the basic method of shoving a folded 18 ga wire into the harness and it didn't work. There is no way to get it well seated and have it not come loose.

    So...

You can find the J28 harness pins here:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/191328057918

    JL1 harness pins here:
    https://www.ebay.com/itm/202508563332

It is the same seller so you'll save on shipping.

The pins come prewired with about 6 inches of what I believe is 20 ga. It seemed like a lot of work to get the pins off, so I simply added a 2 ft length of 18 ga in between the two pins and used waterproof connectors.

When it comes to taking off the dash, here is a great video making it super easy: I didn't bother disconnecting the harness clamps in the back of the dash, just one harness connector off on each side, which includes the JL1, then the whole thing comes off (watch out for the vents on the sides, they have to come all the way out to free the panel).
Don't forget to lower your steering wheel first, I struggled like an idiot until I finally pulled it down and realized how much easier it was.

If like me you have the column shifter, you can pop the tab on the top cover of the steering wheel, push down on the white lever that unlocks the shifter. Now you can move it all the way down, out of the way.

The hardest part was getting the pins well seated in the harness. I pushed each one as far as I could, which was still sticking out a lot. Then I grabbed a pair of small pliers and grabbing the end of the pin, pushed it further in until I could see the pin in the hole on the other side.
The J28 pins were not too bad, but I struggled for a while with the JL1.
At first I thought they were the wrong size, but after a bit of perseverance and force I was able to get them well seated in their spot.

Now you can put everything back together and watch the magic happen :)

    Enjoy!

PS: Sorry for not taking any pictures, after failing at my first attempt I just wanted to get this thing done and move on :D

It allows you to get your average mpg, instant mpg and miles to empty on the dash screen (if you don't already have that option).

I did this years ago. I only had to buy the switch from Toyota (can't remember how much but it was reasonable). It plugged right in and didn't have to do anything else.

    Great info. Thanks.

My truck did not have the needed wiring for a plug and play read out.

Your write up is exactly what the early 2 and gens need.

    Alot of them
I did it when I had my 2013. The switch was roughly about $80. Depending on the trim level, 2 wires needed to be ran to get it functional.

Some people get lucky that way, if you have all the wiring already there.
